Okay , so the Littermaid is not perfect...but I will attempt to explain this cool litterbox and the pros and cons of this product.
How it Works
Basically this is a self cleaning litterbox, once your cat goes to the bathroom there is a sensor that activates a rake 10 minutes after the cats leave the box. The rake starts at one end of the box and moves to the other end as it rakes up clumps of waste hardened by the clumping litter and eventually gets raked into into a plastic receptacle at the other end of the box, then goes back to it's starting position. A very clever invention!!!
Are cats scared and is it noisy?
As many may know cats are very curious creatures and they always want to see everything first and check it out. My cats seemed to get the idea pretty quickly that it was a litter box and just stared at it in disbelief when it started going, I think they were more interested than scared. Now it is second nature to them and I even have one cat that refuses to use the other litter boxes I have because he likes a clean one all of the time and the Littermaid provides him that (I have 2 more regular litter boxes because I recently accumulated a lot more cats through rescuing them.) Okay noise...it is not that bad but I do have mine in the hall closet with a cat door installed in the door, it is like their own little bathroom and I don't have to look at it. Anyways thankfully there was a plug in my closet, but just to let everyone know the Littermaid also uses batteries too! (although I would just hire an electrician for $50 and get a plug if one weren't around)
PROS:
The Cats have clean litter and they love it.
It has worked for 4 years with no problems mechanically.
I can lag on litter patrol!!!!
Even though I will now list the cons of this product I still think it is one of the best investments I have ever made!
Cons:
It is pretty expensive (I paid $200 for it but now I think you can get it at Petsmart for $89)...it is definitely worth $89, and I still think it was worth the $200 when I bought it!
You need to use Premium clumping litter, I find Arm & Hammer clumps the fastest and works the best.
Don't fill it up with too much litter or it will get jammed.
It is kind of hard to get the plastic reservoir out to dump.
Sometimes it breaks up the clumps and doesn't always get the whole clump in the reservoir , (this should reduce with the Arm & Hammer Litter).
It is a bit smaller than a regular litterbox.
Although the plastic receptacles are included when buying this, the plastic receptacles are expensive after that but you can wash them out
And don't buy the Cat Tent!!!, mine came with it but th plastic braces broke virtually within the first few days of putting it together and it is harder to remove the receptacles to empty. Also if you get a jam (by adding too much litter) you have to take the whole dang tent apart to fix the problem. Just forget the Tent, trust me!
Overall I love this product, not really because it is less work, but because my cats have clean litter all the time, and my cleaning is less frequent!
That makes ALL of us happy!
I bought the Littermaid 4 years ago...It is still running like a charm!
