Pros: Accessories included, easy to use
Cons: can get hot in your hands with prolonged use
I have always wanted a rotary tool to assist me with my hobbies. I had always made do without one, but just before Christmas of 1999 I saw a Black and Decker model RT550 in a local retail store I fell in love with. I was planning on getting it after the holidays, but it ended up under the tree..a gift from my wife.
I liked the fact that this tool came with enough accessories to get you started. It also comes with an adapter to use Craftsman and Dremel attachments, making it very versatile. The accessories consisted of sanding disks, grinding stones, cut off disks and polishing pads. Perfect for home use.
The first job I performed was stripping the rust off of a sword I use for reenactments. It had many nicks and bites taken out of the metal and some rust spots. The rotary tool, with it's 6 speed feature, was able to take the rust off, grind the metal knicks to a smooth surface and polish the entire piece. I was anxious to use it again!!
I took on more hobbies with it, and found that it cut my time down for carving wood pieces and for sanding those hard to reach places. I do not know how I got along without it.
Accessories are easy to find and priced well enough, depending on where you go to buy them. I also like the fact that I can use other brand name accessories with it.
I would recommend this to anyone who has thought of buying a rotary tool. I use it for little and big projects. The instruction booklet is a great guide, to assist you in what speeds to use for the project at hand. It comes in a small case, and fits nicely in any cabinet or cupboard.
