| angie420's Full Review: Black Eyed Pea |
I have been going to Black-Eyed Pea for years. It isn't my favorite restaurant, but when I want a good balanced meal and I don't have fifty bucks to spend, I go here.
Walking into BEP, the surrounding are 'homey'. It isn't anything fancy or spectacular, but it is comfortable.
Sometimes you have to wait too long to be seated. However, eventually, the host DOES arrive and you can choose a booth or table to sit at.
Usually, you waiter is very friendly and quick to take your drink order. If you care to indulge, we have many specialty drinks to choose from:
Beer - American, bottled, or draft? They have all the major brands and then some.
Cocktails - Of course they have your basic Margaritas and Daiquiris. They also have the Black-eyed Jack and Black-Eyed Bacardi. The Jack is a blend of blackberry, cranberry and orange juices with Tennessee Whiskey. The Bacardi contains the same juices with Rum.
These are good drinks but a little high. They have daily drink specials as well like Bloody Marys and cheap draft beer.
Wine - Merlot, Chardonnay and Zinfandel just to name a few!
If you don't care to indulge, BEP offers Coca-Cola products in addition to lemonade, flavored tea, milk-shakes, hot chocolate and coffee.
Now that we have our drinks, lets get appetizers!
Chicken fingers with your choice of traditional or buffalo style served with choice of sauce
Mini-Chimis with Chicken are tortilla wraps with chicken, beans and Southwestern veggies, salsa and sour cream.
Potato Skins with melted cheese, bacon and chives. Highly recommended!!
Mozzarella Lone Stars - I assume they only have this product here in Texas. They are your basic cheesesticks, in a big star shape. I don't care for them much because they are too big and not very flavorful.
Fried mushrooms with ranch or honey mustard dressing
You can also build a sampler with any three of the above appetizers.
If you're ready to eat, let's see our soup and salad choices...
Cheese Broccoli Soup and various soup of the day varieties are very good. The dinner salads are huge and include several veggies, not just lettuce. They are fresh. No wilt on this salad.
BEP has wonderful salads big enough to be considered a meal. Country Cobb Salad, Fiesta Salad, Chicken Salad, and in some restaurants, the almighty Chicken Club salad that is the best salad I have ever had. They didn't have it at the one I went to last night and I was rather upset about it. It has EVERYTHING on it! Chicken, bacon, corn, peas...I lived on these when I was pregnant!
Black Eyed Pea is famous for it's chicken fried steak. They have a regular and a Texas size here. The Texas size takes up an entire plate. They are enormous and very good.
In addition, they have Turkey dinner, excellent meat loaf, chicken pot pie, Southwest chicken casserole, and pot roast so tender you don't need a knife.
All of these dinners include two choices of veggies, or a loaded baked potato.
If steak or ribs are more your style, we can do that too. 12 or 8 oz. sirloin topped with mushrooms, onions, and two huge onion rings. The ribs are huge and you can also get grilled chicken breast or pork chops.
These dinners include a baked potato only. Trust me, you won't need anything else!
Seafood varieties aren't highly suggested, but they aren't bad. BEP has grilled salmon, catfish, baked cod and a fried seafood platter that has shrimp and cod fillets. They come with two choices of veggies.
Veggies. They are Black-Eyed Pea's specialty. Vegetarian plates include five or six choices of the below fresh, flavorful vegetables:
Mashed Potato (skins ARE included)
Snap Peas
Mac & Cheese
Squash Casserole
Broccoli Rice Casserole
Bread Dressing (Stuffing)
Black-Eyed Peas
Red Beans and Rice
Glazed Carrots
Green Beans
Fried Okra
French Fries
Fried Corn
Broccoli (Sorry, no cheese sauce!)
Cole Slaw
Corn
Rice
Baked potato always count as two veggies.
If you prefer something on the lighter side, bacon/cheddar burgers, mushroom burger and Southwestern burgers with guacamole, cheddar and olives.
I tried the guacamole last night. I LOVE guacamole, but they put something in it I didn't care for. I don't know what it was, but I would suggest taking a small bite before spreading it all over your food.
Stuffed Spuds come with soup or salad and varieties are pot roast, bacon & cheese and cheese broccoli.
You can also get chicken fried, roast turkey, and grilled chicken club sandwiches. They are served with flavored french fries that are very good.
Your food comes out FAST. I've been coming here close to ten years and I never, EVER remember waiting on my order.
Yet it's hot and it is REAL FOOD! There's no processed food products here and it shows.
Finally, we have desserts. The desserts are huge. Me and my husband shared a slice of cheesecake with caramel and chocolate sauce and we couldn't eat it all. I might add it was a bit too sweet for my taste.
Carrot cake, chocolate cake, raspberry bread pudding, homemade cobbler and banana pudding or also choices of huge desserts you get.
The prices are very reasonable. Look at spending $20-30 per couple.
I think the Black-Eyed Pea is good for all occasions. Whether you go on a date, with friends and family, or just by yourself for a quite, relaxing dinner, BEP is excellent.
I hope I've helped you out, Thanks for reading :)
