xsarahx's Full Review: John Howard Griffin and Robert (AFT) Bonazzi - Bla...
This book is fantastic and I would recommend that any white person or non-Black in America who wants to
begin to understand what racism feels like should read this book. In fact, I think it needs to be required
reading before any Congress person can be sworn into office.
The book is the true story of the author who, at the verge of the 1960s, made his contribution to the civil
rights movement by undergoing tanning treatments and taking medication to darken his skin so much
that he could pass as a Black person. The rest is history. The book details his awakening to the reality of
racist America. One has to take the book with a slight grain of salt because a born White man in America
who has the money and the privilege to opt to "become Black" in the first place, has been socialized
completely differently than a man born Black during this time, and the author's empathy can only go so
far, for when his experiment is over, he returns to the world of White privilege with a best-selling classic
book.
