| abigail1969's Full Review: Black & Decker B2000 Bread Machine |
It has always been a tradition in my husband's family to get together on Memorial Day. I remember one particular time, his aunt had bought one of these great inventions. We had fresh, homemade bread every morning and would have to make a couple more loaves during the day. There were 13 of us staying in 1 house, so the bread did not last very long. I was the one who made up most of the bread up-I loved it. Before we left, she went and bought me one-THANKS, Aunt Sherry.
My particular machine is the B1550 series. It makes 1.5 lb. loaves and is more upright than horizontal. It is so easy to use, even someone who is not "comfortable" in the kitchen can follow these easy directions.
It includes 5 bread settings. The BASIC BREAD setting takes 3.50 hours and is used mostly for breads made with regular bread flour. This setting is also good for breads that have cheese or nuts in them. The RAPID BAKE setting takes only 1.58 hours and also uses bread flour. The loaves made in this cycle are a little "denser" than on the BASIC setting. Still delicious. Because this setting alters the recipes for quicker rising time of the cycle, it needs to be used only with the specific recipes in the manual. The SWEET bread setting takes 3.5 hrs to complete. It is for breads that contain fruit juice, a large amount of sugar, cheese or other ingredients such as raisins, fruit or chocolate. The baking temperature is lower on this cycle which helps prevent burning. The WHOLE GRAIN setting uses whole wheat flour, oats or bran. It takes 4.10 hours to complete because it has a longer rise cycle and also preheats longer. These breads are shorter and denser than the other breads. I have personally never used this cycle as we like the plain and sweet breads the best. The last setting is the DOUGH/PASTA setting. This cycle takes 2 hrs. With this cycle you can made dough for pizzas, rolls, french bread, pretzels, doughnuts and different types of pasta. I have used the dough cycle for rolls and french bread. If you use the pasta recipes, you will have to use a "pasta maker" to shape your pasta. I have never done this. Also, on the first 3 settings, you can select a regular crust or dark crust depending on how "brown" you prefer your bread.
One of my favorite features is the DELAYED TIMER. This feature enables you to put in the ingredients (this takes about 15 min. approx.)and set the timer for up to 13 hrs. I use this a lot at night in order to have fresh bread in the morning. I also have used it in the morning before I leave, this way I can come home and have fresh bread at dinner.
This bread machine is also easy to clean. Just wash the baking pan and mixing paddle with warm water and soap. Wipe the outside of the machine with a damp cloth. DO NOT put any parts in the dishwasher.
The recipes in the manual are easy to follow. They give the order to place the ingredients in the pan, what kind of flour to use, and also some variations and helpful tips. There is a detailed section in the front on "How to Use Your Breadmaker". There is also a "Need Help?" section in the back that answers a lot of FAQ, but also lists a 1-800 # for other inquiries.
Some of my favorite recipes include: the BASIC WHITE-scrumptious when hot; ITALIAN HERB-great with spaghetti and lasagna; CHEESE N ONION-great toasted with butter and garlic; my favorite is CINNAMON RAISIN-it is wonderful to wake up smelling this first thing in the morning-YUMMY!!
I definitely recommend this wonder invention to anyone who enjoys the taste of fresh, homemade bread without the "hard work".
