Pros:Nice power at a nice price. Very portable; very convenient.
Cons:We have only one of these
The Bottom Line: Excellent unit, well worth buying at a discount, of course.
We have central air conditioning at home, which has been useful during this long, hot summer. The air conditioning works well, but not well enough to cool a room in a hurry as the entire house must cool. Playing an instrument is at least a somewhat physical activity that requires extra cooling in the music rooms. My wifes hot flashes also require quick and effective cooling.
I had originally looked for a fan to cool the music room while I was with students. I went to the local Menards and saw this unit, The Black and Decker Typhoon Tower Fan for $26 plus tax. I snapped it up right away, after I noticed the following features:
- Tower design
This would fit nicely in my music room. It also fits nicely in the bedroom when it is on hot flash duty
- Powerful
Menards had a working model set up and it was powerful, even on the low setting.
- Quiet
I needed a fan that would do the job without making a lot of noise during lessons.
- Portable
Its quite light and easily carried between the music room and the bedroom. I couldnt find any specs on it, but Id say it weighs less than 5 pounds.
After I bought it, I began to appreciate some of the other features, including programmability, remote control and oscillation.
Installation of the base was quick and easy for me using a screwdriver, and Im not that handy. It took about 20 minutes. Someone handy could do it in less than 10.
The low setting, with or without oscillation, was enough to keep things pleasant in the music room during lessons or practice sessions. Then, we discovered the true calling for this fan as an antidote for hot flashes.
This works great for that. My wifes disabled, so I need to get up and adjust the air conditioning setting (before we got this) and the windows, if applicable, or the fan when the flashes hit. I have not been enthusiastic about those late night trips back and forth to the thermostat.
This unit does wonderfully well in cooling off my wifes part of the room. The convenience of using the remote to turn it on and off is great. I wish wed had this years ago.
This also has 7 different options for cycling. We generally just run it on low, with or without oscillation.
This fan also has a Timer that will run for up to 7.5 hours, with the options. We havent used this much because my wife doesnt like keeping things on late at night. Plus, most of her hot flashes subside in 15 minutes or less.
Its well-designed. Aside from the tower design, which is somewhat common, it has a little space right on top for the remote unit. The button panels on the fan and the remote are simple and easy to understand.
I recommend this unit highly. Ace Hardware has it online for $49; as I said before, my local Menards has it for $26.
Thanks for reading. God bless!
