| pbwolfie's Full Review: Sigma Design REALmagic Hollywood Plus PCI Video Ca... |
Sigma Designs have been one of the first companies offering MPEG video decoder cards to the public. The first stand alone decoders didn't really catch on with consumers, but as technology boomed and prices have gone down, they've come a long way since.
The Real Magic Hollywood Plus is quite a gem. The card was easy to install and I had no problems with the drivers. I'm using the decoder card with my Toshiba 5X DVD-ROM drive.
When, I popped in my first DVD, WOW, was I amazed. Flawless video. Really smooth and clear. Not grainy at all, which sometimes happens with the DXR3 decoder boards from the Creative Labs DVD kits. The video never dropped a frame. Pretty impressive. Plus, the software interface is easy to use and not buggy.
I tested out the tv out port on the decoder and no problems whatsoever. Video looked flawless as it did on my computer screen.
If your looking to get a DVD kit, purchase a Sony or Toshiba drive with the REAL Magic Hollywood Plus decoder card. The OEM kits for these babies are cheaper and overall, they quality is much better than the Creative Labs kits. However, these days fast computers may not need a separate decoder card for DVD viewing, but if your video starts getting choppy or your CPU is being worked out, pick up the REAL Magic Hollywood Plus. You won't regret it.
