The Bottom Line: It's the best portable minidisc player out there, and it looks good to boot.

| rtbullock's Full Review: Sony Net MD Walkman MZ-N1 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I bought the MZ-N1 about 3 weeks ago, and have run it through its paces quite a bit. The size is impressive, and it looks great. It comes with a nice remote that has a lot of functions for use during playback, but you can't access any recording functions with it. I had to get a 90 degree adapter for the headphone input (you plug the headphones into the remote, and the remote into the MD player) because my Sony headphone plug jacket was too fat to snug into the jack. You have to see it to understand. It has 3 presets for Bass/Treble settings, and you can adjust them manually. The battery life is fantastic. I haven't run any tests to see it's limits, but have used it for days of recording and playback on a single charge. It charges automatically when you put it in its USB cradle. Included is a little extra battery adapter. It takes one AA, and increases the battery life of the unit by about 125%. Normally you won't need it, but if you do it's nice to have. Figure on 30 hours of playing time, or 12 hours of recording time on a single charge. Add the AA, and that improves to 75 hours of playing, and 25 hours of recording. I can't imagine needing more. But if you do, just bring more AAs.
I really bought it for its recording capabilities, and it works great, with two exceptions. One: If you want to manually set the recording level, you set it to manual mode and set your levels. One you hit STOP, it reverts back to automatic recording level. So, each time you have to reset the manual level, or keep it in record/pause if you will be recording again right away. The second thing that is a negative for recording is that you can not upload your recorded material to your PC through the USB connection. You have to do it in real-time using an analog connection. The other drawback is that the software is not very user friendly, and the transfer rates don't live up to their advertised speeds.
Those are really the only complaints I have. I'm thrilled with the sound quality, and the convenience, and remote control is cool. Anyway, I highly recommend it. I can't believe that minidisc isn't more
