PB Blaster Penetrating Catalyst - Don't Bust Your Knuckles - Bust Your Nuts

Written: Oct 16 '11
Pros:Removes rusty bolts and screws, quiets squeaky pulleys and hinges.
Cons:Stinks!
The Bottom Line: Love it. It's worked way better than WD-40 or Liquid Wrench for me and has replaced those other products in my toolbox.

Introduction

PB Penetrating Catalyst from the Blaster Corporation is the best penetrating lubricant I've ever used. It's leaps and bounds ahead of both Liquid Wrench and WD-40 in terms of penetrating ability, and it's been a godsend while working on anything vehicle-related up here in northern Michigan. It's a powerful concentrated penetrating catalyst that works it's way up and into little nooks and crannies to break loose rust and corrosion.

Description

PB Blaster comes in a rather old-school looking white can with a yellow lid. The liquid inside is slick, yellow in color, and smells terrible. It's a non-evaporating lubricant that not only rips through the initial rust, but also leaves behind a thin layer of lubricating film to help keep things from rusting further. The liquid itself is actually magnetic, which really helps it crawl into places where lesser penetrants couldn't get to.

This stuff doesn't come with a little straw taped to the side of the canister like WD-40 or Liquid Wrench do, but it's a little easier to aim the spray where you want it. It actually comes out as a bright yellow stream instead of a clear spray. It's still not as accurate as the straw, but you can always grab a straw from an old can of WD-40, Liquid Wrench, brake cleaner or whatever and use it with the PB Blaster. An added benefit of it being a thick bright yellow color, is that you can tell exactly where it's been sprayed and exactly where it's going as opposed to just making everything look wet.

Experience

I live in northern Michigan where we get our fair share of snow, and the road salt makes everything around here rust pretty quickly. Add to that the fact that I have a 17 year old truck and a 15 year old car that always need work, and you'll see why I love my PB Blaster so much. We've used it on just about everything on a vehicle with bolts in it (and some without) at one time or another. Countless brake jobs, a few tie rods and axles, muffler hangers, drain plugs, spark plugs, you name it. It also works well for cleaning your guns for storage (but not so much for general use, as the smell would scare the deer away).

I like to wipe my tools down with an old rag and some PB Blaster before I put them back in the toolbox. This helps to keep them clean from any grime and grease they may have acquired, as well as leave them protected from rust. It'll also remove the sticky left behind from park passes or other windshield stickers.

PB Blaster does take a little while to work. Just like any other penetrating oil, you have to give it time to actually penetrate. If I had a seized up rusty bolt, I would probably spray it on and go have a snack or watch a movie and then come back to it and give it another quick spray right before trying to remove it. Even if I'd previously tried to wrench it out with a breaker bar to no avail, it would usually come out pretty quickly afterward.

Hazards Identification

According to the Material Safety Data Sheet, inhalation of spray mist may cause irritation to the respiratory tract and may aggravate pre-existing respirator disorders. First aid should include removing to fresh air and giving artificial respiration if not breathing.

Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause mild irritation, possibly dermatitis, and may aggravate pre-existing respiratory disorders. First aid should include removing contaminated clothing and washing with soap and water.

Eye contact is likely to cause immediate or delayed irritation. Irritation will show as redness and/or swelling of the eyes. Ingestion may cause irritation to the mouth, esophagus and stomach. First aid should include flushing eyes with water for 15 minutes.

If you ingest PB Blaster, get medical attention immediately and do not induce vomiting.

Sudden release of pressure could produce projectiles and atomized combustible liquid.

Notice: Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents may be harmful or fatal.

Hazardous Ingredients include Alkyloxypolyethyleneoxyethanol, Solvent Naphtha, Heavy Aromatic (Contains Naphthalene and Pseudocumene), Heavy Petroleum Distillate (Contains Naphthenic Oil), Hydrotreated Light Distillate and Carbon Dioxide as a propellant. PB Penetrating Catalyst has a flash point of 150ºF minimum and is a level 3 aerosol - contents under pressure.
