Blockhead Burrito
499 3rd Avenue
New York, N.Y., 10016
Mexican Cuisine
I have eaten at and ordered take-out from this restaurant. The funny thing is, it must have become a semi-chain restaurant because I've seen another one over a hundred miles away in New Paltz, NY as well. (Luckily, the food was just as good.)
The Space
The restaurant is on the smaller side, which fits right in with New York life. The main dining area is very cozy with approximately 8 to 9 tables (that seat about 30 to 40 people). There is also what seems to be covered outside seating in the rear. I've never eaten back there, but have seen many people dining.
The kitchen seems small - but whoever is preparing the food is efficient.
I have never seen their restroom facilities (if they have them).
The Staff
I've only been acquainted with the day staff at this location. Most of the staff is very nice, aside from one person behind the counter who seemed new and frustrated (he couldn't keep up with the rest of the staff). The "new guy" took my order for take-out and wrote down something slightly different than what I said. The manager overheard when I corrected him after the wrong dish came - he, the manager, corrected the order himself and asked if I wanted the other dish to take with me to give to someone else, free of charge.
Overall, they all seem like good people.
Waitstaff Service
The waitstaff is very rigid and impersonal (or maybe I dined in on a bad day). The waiter came over, quickly slid some chips and salsa on the table, and walked away. He didn't utter one word. He then came back with a menu, but I already knew what I wanted. I told him and he left. The meal came within minutes. He never came back to ask if anything was ok, but he did peer at me a few times.
The Food
There is a good selection of Mexican food on the menu. I love the "Quesedilla Grande with Beef Picadillo." It's a quesedilla (as usual, it comes with cheese), spiced ground beef, yellow rice, black beans, and avocado (there may be some things that I'm leaving out). Now, this quesedilla is big enough for two people (unless you can eat something bigger than your head), so if you get it, pace yourself accordingly.
The food is just so good.
The only thing that I can't get used to is the variance on the chips and salsa. The salsa is generally the same, but the chips are stale sometimes. (Chips come with every meal.) If you're dining in, the chips will probably be fresh (because of the amount of people who dine in); with take-out, the chips are pre-packaged and can sometimes be stale.
Experience
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, I would give Blockhead Burrito at 8.5. I took off 1.5 points because of the stale chips and the quirky personalities of the staff.
The great tasting food and management of the restaurant always makes me want to go back.

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations If dining in, go during a peak time where your chips will be fresh. Try the quesedilla grande with beef picadillo - you''ll love it. Best Suited For: Friends
