Pros: Interesting and unique sushi
Cons: Loud, crowded, some sushi was just average
The Bottom Line: Blowfish Sushi may be appealing for the “in-crowd,” but I’ll have to pass. I find the ambience to be suffocating; I like to eat my sushi in peace.

Blowfish Sushi has three locations: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose. The one in San Jose is located in Santana Row and is the one that I visited.

Reservations
Reservations are recommended for Blowfish Sushi as the wait time can be long during peak hours. We went on a Friday night around six, without a reservation, but somehow managed to get seated right away. As we left the restaurant later, we noticed quite a few people waiting to be seated.
Ambience
Let me be the first to admit that I am more the nerd/geek type than an in-crowd person. As I entered the very dark restaurant, I thought that the restaurant was a very hip. In-crowd people probably do not even use the word hip, but I digress. There was a lot of loud music, funky dressed waitresses, and lots of Japanese anime on the television screens. There were quite a few television screens throughout the restaurant, each playing some Japanese anime. The televisions were silent, thankfully. Even if they werent silent, the loud music would definitely drown out any dialogue.
Seating
The tables at Blowfish Sushi are very close to each other. I felt a little claustrophobic. I could hear the conversations on both sides of the table. And what I found even more annoying was when the waitress would come to talk to the other tables, she would slide in between the two tables (mine and theirs) and I would have a big rump right by my face. Not a pleasant experience. I found myself having to scream across the table to talk with my boyfriend because the noise-level was so high that we could not hear each other.
Food
The food at Blowfish Sushi is quite delightful. We had the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura for an appetizer. It came with two pieces of shrimp and a small assortment of vegetables (broccoli, eggplant, Italian squash, etc). The tempura came with the usual dipping sauce. What was neat about the appetizer was that it also came with some green tea powder and some curry powder to dip the tempura into. Those added some nice flavors to the tempura. The tempura was also very fresh; it was hot when it was brought to the table. We also ordered some sushi. We ordered the Budda, Baked Alaskan Salmon, and Spicy Tuna Roll. My favorite was the Budda, as it was quite unique. It was filled with tuna, unagi curry tempura batter and cucumber. It also had a wasabi tobiko and unagi sauce. The Baked Alaskan Salmon was average; it seemed as though it was barely baked. The Spicy Tuna Roll was fresh, but nothing too exciting. The very spicy sauce for the spicy tuna roll did not seem very spicy at all.
Drinks
There is a wide assortment of alcoholic drinks at Blowfish Sushi. I just had water, so I cannot comment much about the drinks. They did look quite intriguing, as the people at the table next to us ordered a few drinks.
Price
The prices at Blowfish Sushi are moderate. Each roll was about $10, but considering that you get only about 4 (to 6) pieces of sushi per roll, the tab can add up quickly.
Overall Thoughts
Too hip for me. Blowfish Sushi may be appealing for the in-crowd, but Ill have to pass on this sushi joint. I find the ambience to be suffocating; I like to eat my sushi in peace.
