The Blue Bayou at Disneyland
Written: Oct 02 '05 (Updated Feb 22 '09)
Pros:Good food, quiet location, beautiful environment.
Cons:Reservations are a requirement.
The Bottom Line: Other than club 33, this is the best restaurant in the park. Just be careful about the seafood, unless you want my experience
This is a very nice sit-down restaurant at Disneyland. It is themed as a backyard party in New Orleans by a nice river. The river is actually part of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. So if you are in a romantic mood or need a nice long bread, then stop on by.
Theme It is as if you are on the river in Louisiana, after sunset. The back of the restaurant is the back of a two-story house so it also feels as if you are in someone’s backyard. There are even trees that look real under the dim light. It is a very well done theme and does take you away from the hecticness of the park.
Waiting Area This area is a little too small. They have a handful of benches you can sit on, stairs that some people sit on, or you can stand. Not the most comfortable and definitely not a good place for children to play. I’m just glad you don’t have to sit there for very long. Just outside the waiting area (on the street side) are a couple of workers that take reservations and answer questions. They are (usually) professional and very courteous.
Lunch As I child we usually went here for lunch. The prices are not very much higher than the other eating areas, service is better, and it is much more relaxing than the other areas. Relaxation is something my mother needed with two boys in tow. I usually got the French dip and I thought it was outstanding. Occasionally I would get the prime rib when it was a special occasion. I cannot remember a single time when anyone in our family got something we did not like. While the French dip is no longer there, they do have a descent menu. -Roast pork loin -Prime rib -Chicken Florentine -Monte Cristo Sandwich, (turkey and ham in a battered sandwich) -Blackened chicken Caesar Salad -Jambalaya -Crab Cakes -Portobello mushrooms -Seafood spinach salad.
Dinner Dinner was very nice. Dinners include a salad, vegetable gumbo, or clam chowder. -Roast pork loin -Tri-tip steak -Prime rib -Chicken Florentine -Salmon -Shrimp dinner -Crab legs -The special that night was a lobster tail and I think some shrimp in addition. It sounded good but I was in the mood for steak. Note: the menu sometimes changes. This is as of September 29th, 2005. Specials always change. I’ll try to update this when I remember.
Children’s selection It seemed more limited than other sit down restaurants (like Arial’s Grotto). -Mini corn dogs -Pasta -Nuggets These are the typical children’s dinners you will find in both parks so nothing special here. Usually fries are provided and some sort of salad/soup course.
My opinion of the food. The theme they seem to be striving for is Cajun. But I feel they just did a mainstream menu with some Cajun food added in. The dinner food was cooked well. They had a special of lobster tail and some other seafood but I went for the Prime Rib. My wife had tri-tip that was well done. Tri-tip I thought was a cheaper cut of meat, but it was prepared very well. The sauce on the tri-tip really complimented the meat. My wife enjoyed her meal and had no qualms about ordering it again. My prime rib was well prepared as were the glazed vegetables. I asked for it to come out rare and it did. It was served with glazed vegetables and some sort of bread that I really did not like. It wasn’t the typical English pudding that my mom made when she made rib roast. The bread was sweeter and thicker. I only ate a couple of bites. The vegetables on the other hand were fabulous. For my prime rid they served some creamy sauce that was supposed to be horseradish. It might as well have been mayo. After asking it they had anything else, she came out with a large serving of real horseradish. Of course I didn’t go through much, you only need a small amount on your meat, but man was it good. The cream stuff just does not cut it. While the clam chowder is not the best I have had, it is still good. I will definitely order it again. My wife liked her salad but it did not seem to be anything out of the ordinary.
Kid friendly? It is to a degree. If you have rowdy kids then this is not the place. Well-behaved children are welcome.
Reservations You can make reservations by phone or hit the restaurant early. 714-781-3463 is the number to make blue bayou reservations. You can also dial *86 at the resort.
Price You can expect to pay $15-40. Their website states $20-30. I actually prefer going here for lunch than anywhere else especially since the price is not much higher and you get better food than anywhere else in the park, except club 33. At this point though I think my children are a little too active for me to feel comfortable at this restaurant. They also take discounts from premiere pass holders.
Hours One time I was there the park closed at 8pm and this restaurant closed at 7pm. That morning it opened at 11:30. When I was there on a Saturday the restaurant closed at 10pm. So expect it to close 1-2 hours before the park does. I have to assume 11:00 to 11:30 is a typical opening time.
Can I drink? Water? Yes. Typical sodas, ice tea, and water? Of course. Beer and wine? Nope. Alcohol is only available at Club 33, DCA, or Downtown Disney.
My opinion of the service. Service was great. I have no real complaints. They work as a team and helped each other out as much as possible. I was not bugged constantly by them and my dirty plates never hung around very long.
Having a birthday? Well I was a few weeks back. I was staring at the chocolate moose some guests were getting with candles in them and I was wondering how I could get my hands on one. Well when my wife let it slip, the server came back with a candle in one but no song. Thankfully she knew I didn’t want to hear a birthday song. I hate it when people sing that to me. But for those of you that are a little less introverted they will gladly sing to you.
Secrets and trivia If you are not too close to the house and bright lights, look up and you will see shooting stars. The boats that float by have real guests in them, not animatronics.
Location. Disneyland, Anaheim California. It is in the French quarter next to the exit of Pirates of the Caribbean. On a side path between the entrance of the Pirates of the Caribbean and the New Orleans Train station.
Summary This is a very nice sit-down restaurant at Disneyland, in the French quarter. The food has always been good and the service is wonderful. I can’t recall having a bad experience here even once. So if you want good food, you are willing to spend a little more, and you want a break, then this is a great restaurant to hit at Disneyland.
My favorite attractions in Disneyland & California Adventure, and a restaurant review. Indiana Jones: Temple of the Forbidden Eye Soar’in over California In-n-out burger
Update: I went there in January and had some good tasting food. The rice dish with seafood. Well after I paid for the meal I went ahead and threw up my dinner. I think it was either the shrimp or the fish that was not taken care of properly. I will be writing a letter. Just a warning, I'll keep you in touch to see how they treat me with my letter.
