Yes, this is a pregnant woman writing about beer. No, I haven’t had this beer nor any beer in about 8 months. Yes, I want one, I really want one. Unfortunately, this review will be written not from recent experience of tasting Blue Moon Belgian White, but from fond memories and expectations of when I can try it again.
When I was in college, I worked at a restaurant/bar that served over 100 varieties of beer. Beer tasting classes were part of the training process at this restaurant. The training helped the wait staff accurately describe beers to the customers as well as suggest types of beers customers might like. My favorite beer at that time was a beer called Holland Brand. It came in a white bottle and was a nice full body, smooth ale. Unfortunately, the United States distributor of Holland Brand quit importing the beer, and I was no longer able to find it. I couldn’t find anything comparable until I tried Blue Moon Belgian White Wheat.
Even the name, Blue Moon Belgian White, conjures up images of a smooth, cool, white beer. The first taste of the beer is pleasant, crisp, and not overpowering. It has a slight citrus taste and is often served with a lemon. I feel the beer does not need any additional fruit to enhance it’s flavor. This beer is excellent for the Bud or Coors drinker who wants to dive into more full bodied beers.
The only drawback to Blue Moon is that it is brewed by Coors, although you will have a hard time finding the Coors name anywhere on the label. We here in Colorado like to bash Coors as often as possible, and will deny drinking it, even though the brewery does help support our economy.
Coors does deserve credit for bringing out a beer that appeals to beer connoisseurs as well as the average Joe beer drinker. I would suggest first trying this at a restaurant. Once you try it and fall in love with it, go get yourself a six pack. I will understand if you don’t want to share!
