| bluehawq's Full Review: Blue Ribbon T Series Bird Flight Cage T5 |
I was impressed with Blue Ribbon cages from the very first time that I purchased one. I have two of them right now but have had probably seven of them over the past few years. I either get bigger birds, more birds, or find a new and improved model and have to sell or give away the cage that I will be replacing with a new one.
The Blue Ribbon cage that this review is about is referred to as the T5 Flight Cage. The cage is roomy enough for two Cockatiels, or maybe one small parrot type bird such as a Quaker or Pocket Parrot. I would never put something any larger in one, not even the African Gray. Even though the African Gray is much smaller than many other parrots, they still require a lot of room so as to feel like they are not caged in.
I personally would only place just one Cockatiel in the T5 Flight Cage and that is all that I have in this one. I keep my Cockatiels separate. They do get along but when caged together they seem to get depressed. I currently have Slim Shady in this one. He is my newer Cockatiel and is proving to be the best one that I have ever owned. His vocabulary is amazing for a Cockatiel.
The T5 Flight Cage serves its purpose well. It measures 24"x18"x33" and currently is sporting three perches. The cage came equipped with two perches but I had to add a Sundown Aviary Grapevine single perch to it. All my birds get these perches and they are wonderful. The perches that are included with the T5 are good enough for any small bird though and I always leave them in the cages. They are wooden and have a slot on either end for a tight secure fit. I have never experienced any slippage with one of these perches and they are built to last probably forever if need be.
Included with the T5 are standard type feeding trays. You will find these same ones in most medium sized cages and there is really nothing special about them, other than the fact that they fit the cage well. You can place just about any brand of feeding tray in the T5 though. The trays fit on the wire just under the two doors on the front of the cage. You shut the sliding doors or windows right on top of them and that holds them securely in place. The trays will hold a full four ounces of bird seed.
The wiring on the front of the T5 Flight cage is vertical and the ones on the sides are horizontal. This makes it very easy for you to add just about any attachment that you wish. The gauge of the wiring is very heavy and is spaced by ½ inch all over the cage. Tiny birds such as a Finch could get their heads caught in these gaps so please never place a small bird in one of these cages.
There are four doors on the T5. Two in the front as I referenced it being where the feeding trays are placed and there is one door on the top right side. Some may call this a breeding door that was designed for easy access to small peeps and eggs. You will also find a larger door directly in front and this will probably be the one most used.
Here is something that I think you will find a desirable feature. The T5 Flight cage also doubles as a play pen or open perch. The top of the cage has two concealed doors that will slide open so that you may let your bird have a bit of freedom to relax and just perch in the open without feeling that caged effect. All that is necessary is to pull the two wire doors apart like you pull a sliding door apart. It is more like a roll top desk actually. Your bird will love this.
The T5 is or was available in two color choices. I have a white one but you could get it in blue as well. The blue looked to me to be nearly black. I report to be happy with the quality of the paint and how it has been seemingly baked on. It has not peeled or cracked since I have owned it and there has not been an instance where any of the other Blue Ribbon Cages I own now or have owned in the past have peeled or cracked. The only cages that I feel one could have a problem with would be the gold or silver toned ones.
Cleaning the T5 Flight cage is a very simple task and is no trouble at all. All that is needed is to slide the tray from the bottom of the cage and dump the contents, wash, dry and place it back into the plastic bottom. Bird droppings will wipe right off for the most part and any mild soap will be just fine to clean the tray with. Do not ever place the plastic tray in your dishwasher. The heat from the dishwasher will melt the tray. It happened to my sister-in-law once.
The Blue Ribbon T5 Flight cage is not cheap. It is not the most expensive either but you will have to give a fairly hefty sum for one. I bought ours for $80 bucks. I have since seen them around for about $75. Just shop around a bit before you commit to buying one.
As far as warranties go, I do believe that there was a warranty on defects in workmanship and in rusting. I can not quote what that warranty time is. I am very bad about throwing things like that away and never using them except on large appliances and electronics. But I am sure that there is a warranty.
I heartily recommend the Blue Ribbon T5 Flight cage for you and your medium size bird. I believe that you will be very pleased with what you get for your money. I know that I have been. I would be considered a faithful patron of Blue Ribbon products. You may find the Blue Ribbon Cage products at most pet stores and you may also find them online. I hope you enjoy yours as much as my birds and I have over the years should you decide to give one a try.
