| ChriseyB's Full Review: Blue's Clues Cardboard Play House |
This past Christmas brought many new toys and gizmos for my sons. While I wasn’t overly thrilled to have more toys fill the room, I was happy the toys made my boys happy. One of the presents received by my youngest son was the Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse by Fisher Price.
When my son first opened this gift that came in an extremely large box (approximately 4 feet high by 3 feet wide by 3½ inches thick), of course he immediately wanted to open it. Considering we weren’t at home yet, I forbade him to do it. He was upset, but didn’t fight us. Of course, as soon as we got home he wanted us to open it immediately—a request we did and very quickly regretted.
The Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse is a black and white, sturdy cardboard replica of the house on the Blue’s Clues© television show. It comes with 8 jumbo color crayons (black, green, blue, orange, yellow, purple, brown, and red) that are stripped like Steve’s black crayon he uses for his Notebook. The idea is once the Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse is assembled, your child gets the fun job of coloring this black and white house to his or her liking. Overall, it seems like a great idea, right? Well maybe not for all…
The playhouse requires adult assembly. It isn’t really hard to assemble, it is mostly stick flap “A” into flap “B” and fold over flap “C” type of instructions. This wasn’t the problem for us. The problem for us was the size of the Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse once it was assembled.
When the Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse was fully and properly assembled, the house could fit 4 children inside without a problem. (The children’s ages were 6, 5, 3, and 2.) It is a nice idea, but what happened is that it completely filled up my sons’ room. It gave us no room to walk around, etc and really gave them no room on the outside to stand and color like they were supposed to do. The dimensions assembled were approximately 4 feet high by 5 feet wide with the width being approximately 3½ feet wide. I would have put it in the backyard if we had one, but, even if we did, considering it was made of cardboard, it wasn’t really suitable for outside use. What we eventually did with it (since it obviously couldn’t stay assembled) was took it apart and attached it to their walls like a mural they could color on. It was a nice alternative to an impractical gift in size.
Parents, while the Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse is sturdy, fun to play in, and even more fun to color playhouse, it was not designed for people with limited spaces in their home. While I still recommend this toy, I would only recommend to those with large enough space or even a separate playroom that can fit this size of toy inside of the room.
On the other hand, if you do have limited space and still want this toy, then I suggest turning it into a mural like we did. My sons received just as much fun as any other child would have coloring the outside while still giving them the room to walk around and play in their own room. In any case, the Blue’s Clues Cardboard Playhouse by Fisher Price is a nice idea for any Blue’s Clues© lover—of course, this is just my Epinion…
