Pros:A comfortable and supportive mattress
Cons:Takes some getting used to for sleeping (and more)
The Bottom Line: Yes, Bob is annoying, but his Bob-O-Pedic is a great mattress.
In desperate need of a new mattress we spent several hours one Saturday night trying out mattresses at Bob's Discount Furniture and Sleepy's before finally settling on the Bob-O-Pedic as our new mattress set.

What is a Bob-O-Pedic Mattress?
A Bob-O-Pedic mattress is a memory foam mattress sold by the northeast furniture store Bob's Discount Furniture or online at mybobs.com. The Bob-O-Pedic Memory Foam mattress is 11" thick. It comes in twin, extra long twin, full, queen and king sizes. You have the option of firm or the softer plush and in the queen and king sizes you can buy a split mattress with half firm and half plush. The warranty is non-prorated for 20 years. We opted to purchase two extra-long twin firm mattresses with foundations at $1,800 to put into our existing king bed frame.
Sleeping on a Bob-O-Pedic
We have had our new mattresses for about a month now, and I can finally say that I am used to the new bed. A memory foam mattress is significantly different from a traditional inner spring mattress. When you lay on the mattress you sink in and stay there; there is no rebound effect. And that takes some getting used to. You don't sleep on the Bob-O-Pedic as much as you sleep in the Bob-O-Pedic. You slowly sink as the mattress conforms to your body. Because of this, turning over isn't easy. The mattress forms a slight divot where you were laying so when you change positions the memory foam has to go back to its original shape and then conform to your new body position. This isn't an instantaneous adjustment like on a water bed. The foam responds slower so it takes about 30 seconds before you are once again cradled by the mattress. Of course, you may find that you toss and turn a lot less; I know I do. Since the memory foam provides even support over your entire body there are no pressure points and I find I wake far less often during the night then in our old bed. For me less waking means less moving.
Now of course, you may be wondering why we have the Ozzie and Harriet beds. Since memory foam beds absorb energy instead of distributing it throughout the bed you can supposedly jump on these beds and not spill a glass of wine. We tested out the Bob-O-Pedic and the Tempur-Pedic, and as soon as one of us rolled or got out of bed the other one could feel it. While it was nowhere near as much as with a traditional innerspring mattress we knew by having completely separate mattresses we would never feel the other one get out of bed. Our extra long twin mattress fit perfectly in our existing king bed frame and on the rare occasion we make the bed, the comforter makes it look just like a king size bed. And we really cannot feel the other one moving in their bed. I have actually been awake, reading in bed, turned to tell my husband something only to discover he got up and went to the bathroom or to get a snack. I never felt him get out of bed. And I don't recommend trying the wine test, if any liquid gets onto the mattress if will void the warranty. We purchased the protective mattress covers recommended by Bob's Discount Furniture. And the second reason for the twins? We also wanted to be able to upgrade to the Power Bob adjustable bed in the future and having two extra long twin mattresses is the only way to go with that.
One of my concerns about buying any memory foam mattress is that they are supposedly warm to sleep on. Sinking into something akin to insulation is bound to be warm and I always complain that I am too hot when I sleep. I am shocked that I haven't found this to be a problem yet with our Bob-O-Pedic. Since I have my own set of sheets and blankets on my twin bed I am better able to control the layers on me. I am actually cooler and more comfortable in that respect than on our old mattress. My husband does find it a bit warmer, something that he likes since he is always cold. Since the bed is warmer for him he does let me keep the heat a little lower at night which makes me even more comfortable and lowers our heating bill. So far a win-win situation, although I do wonder what summer's heat will bring to our mattress temperature. There are sheets designed to help keep a memory foam mattress cooler so if I find myself sleeping hot I will invest in those sheets, at least for my bed.
We have the firm mattresses as we were told they do soften over time. The mattresses you try in the store are softer than what you will get at home. While I think the softer mattress may have been easier for me to adjust to initially I do believe that over the long haul purchasing the firmer mattress was probably the right decision. Be aware that it will likely take a week or more to adjust to your new mattress. Bob's Discount Furniture does give you a 30 day in home trial. If you still don't like the bed, for a return fee dependent upon the mattress size, you can return it and select a new bed. I don't see us needing to return our beds, within two weeks I was sleeping better than I can remember in years. My back pain is gone, my husband reports that I am snoring less and I wake up feeling refreshed. I love the feeling as the bed molds to fit my body. My Bob-O-Pedic has the right balance between firm support and soft comfort.
We did have some trouble with the sheets staying on the bed. An 11" thick mattress is not very thick by today's standards. And once I finally found reasonably priced twin XL sheets (more of an August back-to-school item) they seemed to fit fine, tucking under the mattress. But with just the regular movement of getting in and out of bed we had trouble with the fitted sheet popping off the bed. I solved that problem by purchasing sheet straps that helpd hold the sheet in place under the mattress. Since then the sheets have stayed in place no matter the activity in the bed.
And Not Sleeping on a Bob-O-Pedic?
Sleep experts recommend that you use your bed only for sleeping and sex. We've covered sleeping aspect of the bed so what about more amorous activities? Well, the small gap between the two twin mattresses in something that needs to be overcome by using one side of the bed or the other. Cuddling in the middle is not very comfortable and there isn't a lot of room to snuggle together on just one mattress. I personally don't mind the minor short term discomfort while awake but I wouldn't want to try and sleep there. I have always wanted my own space for sleeping so that really hasn't been an issue for us. However moving once the mattress has formed to your body isn't easy since you have that slightly stuck feeling. The mattress really isn't conducive to a lot of activity and that is something we are having a more difficult time adjusting to, but we are getting used to that aspect of mattress ownership as well.
Is a Bob-O-Pedic as Good as a Tempur-Pedic Mattress?
We started our mattress shopping at our local Bob's Discount Furniture trying out the memory foam mattress before spending over two hours at Sleepy's lying on the various Tempur-Pedic Mattresses and a few other brands before falling in love with the Tempur-Pedic Deluxe. However the $4,000 price tag certainly gave us pause. So we went right back to Bob's and stretched out on the Bob-O-Pedic again. While I hated to agree with Bob's annoying commercials, we really couldn't tell the difference between the Tempur-Pedic and the Bob-O-Pedic except the price tag.
I don't doubt that Tempur-Pedic is likely a higher quality bed than the Bob-O-Pedic. From what limited research I have been able to do, Tempur-Pedic is a denser foam with smaller cells. These smaller cells supposedly are more durable and provide a more consistent feel to the mattress.
I don't believe in buying more than I need. I really don't believe that the Tempur-Pedic mattress would give me a better night's sleep than my Bob-O-Pedic. More research leads me to believe that most memory foam mattresses only last 3-5 years before you need a new one and collecting on the warranty is almost impossible. I'll be far less upset if our $1,800 mattress needs replacement in 3 years than if $4,000 Tempur-Pedic mattresses did. And that is all I expect. We spent over $2,000 on a supposedly high quality inner spring mattress from Stearns & Foster 8 years ago that was really shot in 4 years but we didn't have the means to replace it until now.
For sleeping I don't think you could beat the Bob-O-Pedic Memory Foam mattress. Sure you could pay more for Tempur-Pedic, but I really don't believe you have to for a good night's sleep. If you live in the northeast and are considering a memory foam mattress definitely check out the Bob-O-Pedic.
