There's nothing I like better than eating good seafood in the open air. Bob's Seafood offers that option. They have a very small dining room inside where you can smell all the cooking or you can move on outside to the deck areas with picnic tables and have your choice of seafoods there. The only draw back is that this place is not on the water. It's on a main street with traffic going by. It is set back a bit so you won't be smelling the diesel fuel of trucks rolling by.
My daughter started school just outside of Portland, Maine on Sabago Lake's St Joseph's College of Maine. Just a five minute drive from there is the main strip of Windham and on it is Bob's Seafood. This is also very close to Sebago Lake, just minutes. We went in to place our orders.
This place seems to do a lot of business on delivery basis sending lobsters on mini-vacations to your doorstep. They have large tanks with water running through them not ten feet from the couple of inside tables. This isn't much of a dining room at all. I wanted something to eat while I was on vacation and I was ready.
The menu has chowders and lobster stew. A newspaper clipping of a food critic mentioned they have a really good New England Clam Chowder. I ordered it and though I can't say it's the best I ever had, (I live in the seaside town of Freeport NY and the Crab Shack beats them) but it was mighty good and worth a try.
Now in my research about this place I did read that they made the best Lobster Roll in Maine as stated by The Maine Lobster Promotion Council. I had to test that out on one of my trips up to see my daughter. The great thing about this place is that it doesn't close down like many other small lobster houses. It's open all year. Yes indeed I did try that lobster roll and it was EXCELLENT! I learned that they use the knuckle meat and the claw. I have always known that the meat in the knuckle is the sweetest a lobster has to offer. It's also a very tender meat there. That's a big part of the scrumptious flavor. They don't use a lot of flavoring and stuff. They just use a sweet tender part of the lobster, add a little mayo and yum! After tasting that roll I'll have to have a bowl of their lobster stew one day.
When I went here with my family I had a plate of scallops. Man, I'm telling you for some reason or other when I have scallops in Maine they always taste the best, sweet and tender. It was the same here at Bob's Seafood!
This is all served on paper plates. Fries and such are available and come with many specials. I never did have a freshly cooked lobster there, but I can tell you they are live and kicking in those large tanks nearby.
Fish and Chips, Fish Chowder, Overstuffed Clam Rolls and lots more are on the menu with prices that are reasonable. A fried clam roll and a cup of chowder is $7. A shrimp roll and fries goes for $6.
This place is owned by two couples. We met Tim & Dianne who are owners of the place and yes there is a Bob too and his wife. I suppose I better not leave her name out. It's Paula.
To order food you walk up to the counter. Well Tim and Dianne were as friendly as can be. We talked about their business and also some common places we have traveled. The US VI being one of them. I like it when people work hard and then take time out to enjoy themselves. Those are the type people who put their heart into their business when they are there.
Anyways...let me sum things up saying I do miss not being on a dock when eating here but hey this is inland a little bit. The food is very fresh, prepared perfectly and it's served on paper plates to eat in the limited tables inside or have on one of the large decks outside. Though we were not on the water, it was still an excellent seafood eatin' experience for me.
