Bobbi Brown Essentials Blush: Bobbi's Signature Powder Blush

Written: May 05 '02
Pros:Beautiful color selections, blends easily
Cons:Darker shades seems higher in pigment, expensive
The Bottom Line: Bobbi Brown Blush is a classic, natural looking blush that is worth every cent.

Although I love to experiment with different cosmetics, I am quite conservative when it comes to blush. I have been using the very subtle Clinique Sheer Powder Blush (in the shades Lucky Clover and New Clover) since 1990, and I was always quite pleased with the natural results. However, a few months ago, while visiting a Bobbi Brown cosmetics counter in Seattle, I ventured into the undiscovered territory of Bobbi Brown blush. After sampling a few shades in the Bobbi Brown Essentials Collection, I found a flattering fit for my skin tone: a gorgeous neutral soft medium tawny/rose/pink shade called “Blushed”.

The Difference
I would define the perfect blush as one that is a natural looking, oil-free matte blush that is not artificial, extreme, colored, or sparkling. Bobbi Brown’s blush has just a slight hint of shimmer (not too glittery, unlike many blushes). The texture is amazing. It goes on naturally and compliments the natural skin tone in my face. I also like the fact that this blush blends so naturally, that it is almost error free (you can add more to build up on the color for a more dramatic look). I do prefer the look of powder blush, because it presents a more finished look, which is great for contouring cheekbones.

Bobbi Brown products have always marketed a very classic, natural look, and I can see that by the products I have tried. Bobbi Brown also markets a cream blush stick, although I prefer the powder blush. (If you have an oily complexion, Bobbi Brown recommends a powder blush to absorb oil for a matte finish.)

Colors
Bobbie Brown Blush offers “skin-tone-correct colors” that are sheer enough that skin shows through.(That’s why they compliment the skin, instead of competing with it). The colors look natural and provide a healthy, longwearing glow. The colors include: Sand Pink (I may try this one soon) , Almond, Soft Pink, Tawny, Plum, Currant, Nectar, Rose, Apricot, Pale Pink, Spice, and my new cosmetic staple , Blushed. This color adds a nice lift to my skin as it brings out my skin tone when I wear the brightest or darkest colors. (I tried the plum, and it was a little too pigmented for my fair skin).

The Price, Packaging and Brush Recommendations
I have to admit I never thought that I would pay $19 for blush. However, this blush is worth it. It blends effortlessly, and provides warmth to my skin texture. I purchased the blush three months ago, and haven’t even made the slightest impression in the powder with my daily use. So, I think the investment is worthwhile, since this blush lasts.

The packaging for Bobbi Brown's Blush is much different from Clinique or other department brands. Bobbi Brown Blush comes in an elegant, little round container, without a brush or compact. So, you will also need to invest in a good blush brush if haven’t done so already (I have always preferred to use a fuller brush then what is included with most blushes anyway).

Bobbi Brown recommends their Professional Brush which is a whopping $42.50 (although, I am told by some of my fellow beauty addicts that once you try this brush, you may never go back). Bobbi’s brush is designed to apply blush with a soft edge to eliminate errors in application. However, the brush that I am using is a Lancome Blush Brush. (This brush is also expensive on it’s own, but mine came with a gift set). However, Wal-Mart and Target sell some wonderful brushes that are amazing knockoffs (I use a nice $5 Wal-Mart brush for my loose powder that works great).

Application:
For perfect blush application, Bobbi Brown’s web site recommends sweeping a large brush in circles over the blush, then tap to remove excess. Go up along cheekbones, down nose, and across forehead and chin. I don’t use that much, I usually just use a very gentle stroke of the brush over the blush color and apply to "apple" of my cheeks, blending outward and around for a natural result.

Where To Buy Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
Bobbi Brown Cosmetics are available at better department stores, and online at bobbibrown.com, Gloss.com (which offers some of my other favorite brands), or by following the links on this page.

I was so pleased with the results of this blush that I went on to purchase two Bobbi Brown’s lipstick. Thanks to this blush, I am now a major Bobbi Brown fan!
