I first started using Bobbi Brown cosmetics two years ago. I cannot walk out of any department store without winding my way through the cosmetics and fragrance department. I don’t know what possessed me to spend $85 with Bobbi Brown that one day in May; it’s not like I came away with any freebies or a crusty loaf of bread (a la Lancome).
I went up to the counter looking for foundation. I came away with lipstick, a blush stick, powder, and a puff accessory, no foundation. I made due with my drugstore brand and forgot what my mission was. It’s not like my vanity didn’t already hold various bottles of various foundations already.
While strolling through my local Neiman Marcus I found myself back at the Bobbi Brown counter perusing their latest offerings. No, I didn’t really need anything, I created the need myself. I was going to buy foundation and I decided to try a new formulation. I had the bottles, sticks, compacts and it had been a while since I owned a fresh jar of cream foundation. My Chanel jar was congealing and separating, its expiration date was long overdue. I generally save cream foundations for the evening and during drier periods of the year. I reach for cream when my skin can afford more coverage without a breakout and I need a really, really smooth base.
Foundations are typically used to cover blemishes and provide the skin with a healthy look and base with which to start the makeup process. Foundations can also help keep the skin from drying out if you desire a formulation with this added benefit. If you have normal to dry skin or dry skin then you may want to consider a cream-type foundation. If you have oily skin or are prone to breakouts, I wouldn’t recommend this formulation.
What did I walk away with that day? What did the saleswoman test via a Q-Tip on my upper neck area? Bobbi Brown Essentials Fresh Glow Cream Foundation in Sand (2). This one ounce jar ($35) contains (according to Bobbi Brown):
A lightweight whipped foundation for normal to dry and dry skin. Provides a fresh, dewy finish that will illuminate your skin and minimize the look of fine lines. Drier and more mature skins will especially love this formula.
Is this what I found? Yep. It is light, it is creamy. It provides a dewy finish unlike some of my powdery foundations because it is a cream. I make it more matte by applying powder and a touch of Benefit’s Dr. Feelgood. I have a smooth base on my face and that is exactly what I’m after. I don’t feel any excess coverage like I do with my Chanel creams, which are much more oily. The coverage is really good without looking the least bit fake and I love how it glides on and blends. The key for cream is the proper color choice, I guess that goes for most makeup choices. Too dark and the colors won’t blend well, too light and the coverage isn’t there.
The longevity is excellent, just a touchup of powder can get me through an entire day without the need to start over. You should be able to find a color to suit you as it comes in twelve shades that suit most every skin tone. My medium to light tone fairs well with Sand.
The fragrance is pleasant and doesn’t have a chemical smell like some of my other foundations and I like the packaging. The cream comes packaged in a quality black box with white writing. An opaque jar with black lid holds the contents. My one gripe is the need to dig when you get toward the bottom and around the edges. Thankfully the jar is not too deep or you would have to rely on a utensil to get the precious last traces, the jar is a hefty $35.
The ingredients lean more toward moisturizers, phenyl trimethicone (moisturizer), vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate), oil soluble vitamin C…
