Boca Grande is a Mexican restaurant with two locations in Cambridge and one in Brookline, Massachusetts. I am very familiar with the one on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge between Harvard Square and Porter Square. It is a very informal, self-service restaurant. You step to the cash register, place your order, and pay for it. You are given a numbered receipt. You choose a seat and, when your number is called, you step up to the counter and pick it your order. The simple store-front room has three long communal tables (made up of smaller tables placed together) and smaller tables for two or four on the edges of the room. It is not unusual to see young parents with small children among the customers. The wooden chairs are quite adequate, but not especially comfortable. This is the sort of restaurant where one gets in and out in a fairly brief time, not a place where one tends to linger.
Chicken and beef are the two meats that figure on the menu. There is a variety of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas. One can also get a “Mexican plate” consisting of such things as Chicken Ranchero, Lemon Chicken, or a grilled steak plus rice and beans. The Lemon Chicken is my favorite, and the Chicken Ranchero my second favorite. The food is generally delicious. Spices are used judiciously in cooking, but not excessively. When there, I have the impression that I am eating something very much like a Mexican home-cooked meal. You have to order optional hot sauce in order to have a spicy experience. One could conceivably have a meatless meal here, but I would not recommend going there unless one were looking for beef or chicken.
Since one can eat here for approximately five dollars a person, this restaurant is definitely one of the best bargains in Cambridge. I recommend it highly for meat-eaters seeking a quick, inexpensive, tasty meal.
