Bonfante Gardens Theme Park in Gilroy, California (about 45 minutes south of San Jose)is fabulous! This is not a theme park along the lines of a Six Flags full of radical rides, screams and thrills. In fact, teenagers looking for that sort of thing will be disappointed, but... Bonfante Gardens is, without a doubt, one of the most lovely places a family could spend a day. The rides are for the most part pretty mellow and suitable for all ages. Especially wonderful (a favorite with adult women)is the Rainbow Garden Round Boat Ride, which gently floats down a meandering garden 'stream' accompanied by calming music. The Pinnacle Rock Maze is an unbelievably fun maze complete with sound effects and occasional mist - it's another favorite! South County Backroads is similar to Disney's Autopia and in my opinion surpasses it! (no exhaust fumes - it's electric) The Quicksilver Express is a fun rollercoaster that's just wild enough to give one a thrill, but not so scary (no loops) younger children and grandparents won't ride it. (even my mother, a grandma, rode it last time we were there!) My son (12 y/o) also enjoys the Banana Split and Mushroom Swing, and we all enjoy riding the paddle boat ducks on the lake!
Bonfante Gardens is much more than just rides it is, as the name states, gardens - beautiful gardens! Every step taken is bordered by beauty. It's impossible not to just stop and gaze at most every turn as the eye is drawn to another magnificent vista. Additionally, the Circus Trees, which are located throughout the park are amazing. There are a number of places to eat at Bonfante, and not only is the food good, but the prices are reasonable. Can you believe they will even give you a cup of ice - no charge?! Also notable, kids can actually win at the midway style games!
Bonfante Gardens is not so large it can't be seen in a day, it's not exhausting and there are many comfortable shady spots to relax and just take in the splendor. We love it so much we purchased season passes!
