| PALWalrus's Full Review: Bonny Doon 2005 Pacific Rim Dry Riesling Wine |
Catching the eye
Every been shopping for a wine a just had a particular bottle design catch your eye and you had to buy it. Well that is what happened with this particular wine. Several years ago shopping for a drier Riesling that we wanted to pair with some sushi I happened upon this wine. The pink artifical cork and unique see-through labeling might have scared more faint-hearted buyers off, but we just had to try it. The Bonny Doon vineyards are known for their unusual labeling and naming.
Opening the bottle
The clear bottle displays a light gold colored wine with perhaps a slight tinge of green. Opening the bottle and initial smell is intriguing, fruity. Pouring the wine and sniffing revealed a distinct nose of apricot, perhaps also honeydew melon. The legs on the glass indicate a fair degree of alcohol.
Tasty bit
Tasting this wine is a real experience. The apricot nose carries over to the palate and this smooth slightly dry riesling does not disappoint. A full flavored and intriguing flavor. It reminds me of a nobel dry wine, where the botrytised grapes are selected to give unique flavor.
With the food...
This wine was perfectly paired with sushi. It also works extremely well with most asian food and is superb by itself or with a cheese and fruit board. Just a very interesting wine and certainly a worthwhile diversion from the other often overly sweet rieslings available on the market.
Changes
Over the years this wine has changed from the pink cork to a pink screwtop, as have many other younger drinking wines have. If anything this has improved the taste further. Do not let the screwtop put you off, screwtop no longer means cheap.
