Pros:Big, private litter box.
Cons:Requires a special liner.
The Bottom Line: Good for multiple cat household, due to its size and ability to reduce kitty litter mess.
As an owner of two inside cats, there was one thing I was always trying to improve upon in our environment. The kitty litter box.
WHY NOT A BASIC, OPEN BOX?
A basic litter box (open pan) wouldn't work for us.
For one, we are tight in space. We don't have a good location for a litter box. I do know that having one out in the open for everyone to see and smell in the living room is pretty disgusting.
Second, we have two cats. And one is a huge 23 pounds. He makes a mess kicking litter out of the open box when he tries to cover his feces.
Third, we have a dog. And, like most dogs, she likes to eat cat feces.
Fourth, we have two children. And, we do not want them to copy the dog's behavior.
HOW BOODA DOME WORKED
Size: The Booda Dome is definitely large enough to accommodate two cats using the litter box. It is BIG and ROUND. It is advertised to have a 21 inch diameter and is 21 inches high. So expect it to take up a good 4 square feet in any corner that you place it.
Litter Mess: I was hoping the Booda Dome would reduce the amount of litter that the cats left around the house. I had tried putting rugs under the box, those special mats that supposedly help reduce litter from their paws, etc. Nothing worked. So I thought the ramp would help reduce the mess. The Booda helps reduce the mess, compared to an open box and other covered boxes. But it didn't eliminate the problem. Mostly, it just kept the cats from kicking litter out when they cover their feces. It does nothing to keep the litter that is attached on their hairy paws from coming out.
Litter: Speaking of litter, this beast of a box holds around 10 pounds of litter at once. So I am buying 20 pounds of litter every two weeks. We scoop out pee and poo between these major litter changes.
Smell: Cat poo smells. Nothing, not even the Booda Dome's filter can hide that fact. Cleaning the box daily is the best way to reduce the smell.
Cleaning: The size of the litter box makes it cumbersome to clean. It isn't easy to take it outside to dump into a garbage bag. And if you want to use liners, you have to buy the ones made just for this boxes unique shape. So cleaning is difficult.
Privacy: The box has a cover. No trap door for the cats to walk through to get to their box. Once they go up the ramp, they are in a very private area to do their business. And no one can see them DO their business. Or look at their business when it's over, until it's time to clean the litter box.
Variety: There were a few colors to choose from at the pet store. Tan, beige and purple. We bought purple.
Cost: We paid around $30 for this box. About the same price we paid for the corner litter box. It isn't as expensive as fancy electronic litter boxes that auto clean. But it isn't a cheap 5 buck box either.
COMPARED TO THE COMPETITION
We had the open litter box/ pan. And that showed the poo to guests and left a huge mess.
We also had a corner litter box with a "door flap" they had to walk through. The cats HATED the flap, so I ended up taking it down. And there actually wasn't a lot of room in the box. And, the litter would always get kicked out.
FINAL SAY
It is a pain to clean, but a lot less messy. It keeps the poo out of sight, although does nothing for the smell. It is good for a two cat household. We give it two paws up.
