sleeper54's Full Review: Jo Cryder - 1000 Fences And Gates
...
Soooo . . .ya wanna buy a gate..?? How about a fence to set your gate in..?? Heck, ya aint gonna want yur fancy ornamental gate in some tired, old, humdrum fence, are yuh..??
Here let me show you some pictures of some similar gates and fences. Maybe it will spark your imagination and help you appreciate the beauty of a well-planned fence and gate.
Whats that..?? Heck yes, we got a whole lotta ones to choose from. Shoot, last time I counted we had 1000 Fences and Gates ...or my name aint Jo Cryder. Wait ...it aint Jo Cryder. Oh never mind, lets just keep going here.
As I said, lets look at some pictures. We got at least six different bunches to look at. We got your plain ( well, really they're pretty dang fancy at times, but you know what I mean ) ...I was saying, we got your plain Metal Fences and Gates and here we have Stone, Masonry or Concrete Fences. And lookie here: Wood or Wood Appearing Fences and Gates.
Whats that..?? ' Wood appearing..??' Dang if I know, stuff the termites will bust their chops on I guess. Plastic or composite or some damn yankee thing like that I suppose.
And lookie here: Metal Fences and Gates Combined with Stone, Masonry, or Concrete. And here we got Wood and Wood Appearing ( I know, I hear ya... ) Fences and Gates Combined with Stone, Masonry, or Concrete.
Yup ...kinda takes my breath away too..!!
Ya know, most of these here fences are in the South, in good ol' Dixie. Heck, everyone knows no Yankee builder or architect could build a handsome fence or gate what that he didn't steal the idea from some southern gentleman..! Bout the farthest North we go is Pennsylvania, there in Gettysburg where General Lee was dealt a bad hole card. Damn Yankees..!!
Sorry . . .that always gets my blood to boiling just thinking about that day.
A lot of the pictures of gates and fences in this here book are pretty cool. Some are close-up showing details while others are more medium or long-distance shots showing how the fence and gate blend into the landscape, yard, or building. This book can really get you to thinking about the different types of fences out there and perhaps help you see how they might look on your own property.
I certainly will admit some (many..?) of these pics seem like, well . . .snapshots of a fence and/or gate. Yup, thats a fence alright. Good for that one.
But I really like a lot of the ones we got that blend iron and stone. Theres just sometin' about that combo that gets my blood to pumping.
There are also some famous gates and fences in here. Didn't know fences and gates could be famous, did ya..?? Shoot, ol' Jeff Davis's Presidential Library and Home In Biloxi, Mississippi is in here; Graceland...yeah, that Graceland, is featured; Monticello; the White House in Washington D.C.. Heck, there is even a National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee that has some fences right up there on the walls..!! Don't that look silly..!!
It is also kinda sad that many of the pictures in here were taken in the months before Hurricane Katrina ravaged much of New Orleans, Mobile, and the surrounding areas. It is scary to think that many of these fine ornamental fences may no longer exist.
The Bottom Line
Anyway, if you are looking for a wide variety of wooden, stone, metal, and other fences to consider copying, or just to admire, 1000 Fences and Gateshas countless styles and examples and might be worth checking out at the library or bookstore.
