FlanderFlop's Full Review: Karen Katz - A Potty for Me!
As the proud parent of a two year old I am quickly learning that there are three things that make a good book for a toddler. The first is durability, the second is a good flow that allows the toddler to remain interested, and the third is the ability to use the book as a teaching tool. This book falls short is all areas except durability.
I am a firm believer that children pick up their grammar skills largely by accident. While them may not understand all the exact rules of the language they will by default use the grammar that they are exposed to in their everyday conversations. So while I may look the other way at grammar mistakes if they serve a purpose, but I had a little trouble understanding why they would be included in this book. For example, Me and Bunny sit awhile has roughly the same flow and rhyme as Bunny and I sit awhile so there is really no reason to include the mistake. On the other hand the final line of the book, Im so proud of me is improper, but you can understand why they would use it given the attempted rhyme of the book.
Moving beyond the grammar, the flow of this book is rather halting and the rhyme is questionable in some areas. This choppy feel makes it not only less pleasing to the ear, but also a little harder to read upside down. While this is a minor complaint I think it is a valid one.
Despite the generally poor quality of the text, the purpose of the book is a good one. The book shows that potty training takes some time, mistakes will happen, and suggests that the eventual accomplishment is worth the effort. So this will eventually be a good book to read on the potty, and we will probably use it for that purpose unless we find a better book in the interim,
The one area where this book is well designed is that each page has a full sized foldout that is actually the same sheet as the page. This gives the child something to open up to get the next tidbit of the story. This design for me is far superior to the flap designed books with flaps glued onto the pages. We have an number of the flap style books and most of the flaps have been torn off leaving the stories incomplete. To its credit, this book is still intact.
All and all, this book gets a dont buy, but dont throw it out rating. It is really not worth your money to purchase, but if you have it, or it is given to you, you will get some use out of it, so hang on to it.
