kgetchel's Full Review: America's Best Lost Recipes: 121 Kitchen-Tested He...
I received "America's Best Lost Recipes" book last year for Christmas. The book has lots of great pictures and as anyone knows to be a great cookbook it better have pictures, else how would you know what yours is supposed to look like?
I have only tried the dessert recipes in this book, so all my comments will be skewed from that angle.
The “notes from the Kitchen” are very beneficial. They tell you what they tried and what didn’t work. Take for instance the “Oatmeal cake” they say be sure to use a metal pan (because part of the recipe requires a broiler). The recipe calls for quick oats, and in the notes it said what would happen if you decided to use longer cooking rolled oats. Very helpful information!
Also each recipes comes with a story. Using the Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake as an example (though I have not tried it), it explains what the sauerkraut does for the cake and makes you at least want to try it and not be turned off by it.
There are a lot of unusual recipes like the one above and like Coffee Carnival, which is coffee tapioca. Sounds weird but is really good. Very powerful but very good.
The recipes that I made were easy to follow. The book covers all the usual topics: starters, salads, soups, breakfast, breads, cakes, pies, cookies, but wait there is more!!! There is 200 pages of recipes then it gives you some conversion charts at the end.
I have a ton of cookbooks, so no one gets all the attention, but this book is on my top shelf of favorites. What I like about "America's Best Lost Recipes" is that it is not a duplication of all my other cookbooks, it is unique into itself.
The back of the book comes with blank recipe cards for you to use and a little pouch on the back cover to store them.
Of the recipes that I made, I did not find anything difficult about them, and they all came out just like they were supposed to.
