| SurgRN911's Full Review: Melody Carlson - An Irish Christmas |
I'll admit the title pulled me in on this book. It was Christmas and I'm Irish so I thought why not? What a pleasant surprise I gave to myself.
With the sudden loss of her husband, Colleen takes her son, Jamie, back to his roots, Ireland, in an effort to bridge the distance between them and perhaps come to grips with something that has troubled her for some time. As with a lot of families, each person has their own little private secrets they dont always share with each other. Some secrets can be devastating, some can be helpful. How we reach our own destination at truth, and the ability to share that truth, is what makes us each individual.
The secret Colleen has been carrying for 20 years could change both her life and the life of her son. The secret he's been carrying, though not so long, also has the ability to change both their lives. Is this the right time to share that knowledge or should she remain silent. Is this the right time or should he remain silent? Her relationship with Jamie has become stilted and she feels they are growing further and further apart. Jamie, in turn, loves his mother deeply but often feels estranged from her.
It is the ability of author Melody Carlson to make these people seem real and life-like, people you can identify with and recognize. Even though the book sometimes moves slowly and the story becomes somewhat complex, you still are drawn to these people that seem a little less than perfect but extremely real.
This book is certainly one that shows great love and dedication. It is told in a narrative form, changing between Colleens outlook then Jamies then back again. It is interesting to see how these same situations, though told by different perspectives, relate to each other. In the end it becomes a spiritually soothing book and gives you personal hope that hard lines can be softened and bridges can be crossed.
It is a fairly quick read, I finished it in two evenings. Ms. Carlson has written over 200 books and seems dedicated to finding hope and grace in her writings.
This would make an excellent gift for someone that is searching their own soul and trying to overcome doubts. It isnt necessarily one that needs to center around the Christmas season but could be enjoyed any time of the year. The story, itself, takes place during the Christmas season, hence the name.
