Anthem is Ayn Rand's simplest and most concise work of fiction. It is a highly readable book that divulges the essence of Ayn Rand's philosophy in a few hours. Anthem tells the story of Equality 7-2125, a young man living in the future. The world has been overtaken by collectivism, and the word "I" has been expunged from the language. The novella tells of his struggles to realise the fundamental problem of this society. Rand's use of a quasi-biblical style lends to an aura of simplistic beauty and innocence. Anthem is a love story, a philosophical primer, and a beautiful little book. More than anything, it is an anthem to the human ego and that thing within a man which makes him a god. If you are unfamiliar with Ayn Rand, you should definitely read this book to explore her philosophy (Objectivism). If you have already read Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, or any of her other books, you should still check out Anthem to experience this beautiful little song of a book.
