The book Anthem by Ayn Rand was a book about Communism and how it affects some people. When they speak, they refer to themselves as “we.” They talk about themselves as we because everyone is each other’s brother. There is no such thing as “I.” This was an extremely well written, but short book. I feel that Rand should have made this book a little longer, as more action could have been incorporated into the story.
There was a man whose name under Communist rule was Equality
7-2521. He later changed his name in the book to Prometheus. In the beginning of the book, the place where he lived was under Communist rule. There was a Home of the Students, which after 15 years the Council of Vocations decided what their lifelong mandate would be. They had to except their mandate or they would be lashed.
The day finally came where it was decided that Equality 7-2521 was to become a Street Sweeper. He immediately had to go to the Home of the Street Sweepers where all the other Street Sweepers were living. He wanted to be a scholar and go to the Home of the Scholars. They were the most respected group of people. The Street Sweepers had very strict schedules and would be lashed if they did not follow. If you disobeyed laws, you would also be sent to the Palace of Corrective Detention.
While he was Street Sweeping, he found a whole that was from the Unmentionable Times. They were not allowed to mention anything about before. He found an amazing invention of how compasses work and how there is light. He found it amazing and during the theatre times, he went to the tunnel that was of the Unmentionable Times and studied about that kind of stuff. He was forbidden to study, only the Scholars were allowed to. He went there every night because it was easy to sneak out of the theatre uncaught. One day, he decided he wanted to go to the World Council of Scholars meeting and show them what he had discovered. He had forgotten that he had to be back in the theatre by a certain time or else he would be caught. He came back late and never told where he was even though he was being lashed. It was easy for him to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention. He escaped and went back into his tunnel. The next day, he would show the World Council of Scholars what he had.
He went the next day and the Council thought it was funny that a Street Sweeper would be showing them something. They listened and they ran to the wall and wanted to lash Equality 7-2521. He took the glass box which contained the wires and ran to the Uncharted Forest where it was said that no one comes out of there alive. He ran into the forest and made camp.
All through that time, he had a love for a girl named Liberty 5-3000. He later named that girl the Golden One. Then later named her Gaea after someone in the bible. The people were not supposed to love each other and would mate once a year one night when they were told to do so. She had such a deep affection for him that she followed his footsteps into the forest and found him.
In the forest, they kept walking together until they found something that looked like a home. They thought that this was part of the Unmentionable Times, but since they weren’t under Communist rule in the Uncharted Forest, they went in. They found the greatest stuff and so many wires, which lighted the house. They decided they were going to stay there for the rest of their lives. They could kill animals in the forest for food and go to a nearby river for water. That is where Equality 7-2521 (now The Unconquered, named by the Golden One) and Liberty 5-3000 (now the Golden One, named by The Unconquered) were given the names by The Unconquered as Gaea and Prometheus. Gaea was now pregnant with Prometheus’s baby. They found out by reading scriptures in the house that there was a word “I,” which was forbidden to say. They do not say we at the end. The one sacred word that will never be forgotten is “ego.” They will always have pride in themselves, even if they are not supposed to.
I think this was a very well written book that deserves a lot of credit for the style of writing. It really shows how one man can do something that changes another person’s life. I recommend this book to people who have good reading comprehension because it can get a little hard to comprehend at some points. Overall, Ayn Rand wrote a very good book.
