artemis8's Full Review: Mark Crilley - Miki Falls 3: Autumn
After reading Spring and Summer, I was looking forward to reading the third book in the Miki Falls series, Autumn. Miki and Hiro are both high school students, but Hiro has a secret.
Hiro has a job as a Deliverer and he isn't quite human. Part of his job prevents him from loving anyone, but he and Miki do love one another. Unfortunately that means hiding from the Elders and Miki must leave her family to do so. It can become dangerous for them, especially if they are discovered.
Miki and Hiro travel far from their home city and go to visit a friend Hiro met a long time, who used to be a Deliverer too. While they arrive unannounced she is welcoming and lets them stay there. But when those who are hunting them down come too close they have to be on the move again. It is getting colder and more difficult and then an old colleague and one who doesn't approve of their relationship, Reika, shows up to complicate matters more.
Autumn is by Mark Crilley and I love his artwork. These books are considered manga, I beleive, and are like comic books for young adults though I enjoyed the book as an adult as well. Though this book is 169 pages long I read it in under an hour. There are word bubbles and narration in rectangles on each page, but there is a lot told from the facial expressions in the illustrations. The artwork is amazing. Miki is pretty with large eyes. The story flows really well and while everything is in black and white, things like the two walking in the rain are easy to tell by the blurring of objects in the scene. I like how Miki's hair flips in the wind or how surprised she looks in certain situations.
Crilley makes a very enjoyable book with great artwork, an interesting story, and something that can easily be read in one sitting. And it does leave it open to make you want to read the final book in the series. I am definitely looking forward to reading Winter.
Is their secret safe? It s autumn, and Miki Yoshida s life is finally settling into a routine. She and Hiro are spending all their time together, and ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
