kamel622's Full Review: Sandra Boynton - Blue Hat, Green Hat
One of the Sandra Boynton board books that I recently checked out of the library to read to my little family daycare children is Blue Hat, Green Hat.
This 16 page board book was written and illustrated by Ms. Boynton and was published by Little Simon, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, in 1984.
On the first page of this book we meet the four main characters, an elephant, a moose, a bear and a turkey. Each of them are wearing a hat of different colors but the turkey, instead of putting the hat on his head is standing in it. Blue hat, green hat, red hat, Oops is what the medium large black text says. It is placed right next to each animal so there is no confusion about hat colors or who the Oops belongs to.
The book continues with the cartoon animals putting on shirts, pants, coats, socks and shoes. Each time the animals put on different colors and the silly turkey puts his clothing on the wrong way. He wears shoes on his head or his pants over his head. Each time the text next to him simply says Oops. I love how this is set up because not only was I able to run my finger under the words on the page and my daycare children, ages 2 (today!) to 5 years old, they could name the colors and objects so felt as if they were reading with me. They absolutely loved knowing the turkey was going to get it wrong and giggled more and more with each Oops they said.
The final two page spread shows the turkey finally all dressed correctly in his yellow hat, green shirt, blue pants, purple socks and red shoes. On the last page we see the elephant, bear and moose in bathing suits next to a pool and the silly turkey diving in with all of his clothes on and of course the word oops written near him.
The children love this ending and so do I, the only thing I wish is that there would have been just one more page between the page where the turkey is fully dressed and the page of him diving into the pool, so that the pool scene would have appeared on the left hand side and we wouldnt see it until turning the page.
The kids loved the characters and their silly expressions in this book. I liked that the characters were placed on a white background and very little detail was placed around them. They were the main focus of each page and the colors of clothing were done in bright colors so that the reader could reinforce the colors to young children. Since Cindy is just beginning to learn colors this is very helpful with her. While both Jake and Sonny know their colors they had great fun saying them along with me and of course beating me to the punch on most pages.
I would recommend this book for infant through preschoolers, but find that I am as delighted with Ms. Boyntons books as the children are, so if you cant find a little one to read it to, you might just enjoy it yourself!
