CindyJean's Full Review: Colleen Coble - Cry in the Night
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME
When I opened up my most recent shipment from Wynn-Wynn Media a few days ago I was sure that I was getting an extra birthday gift. What did I find inside? A copy of Colleen Coble's upcoming novel.
Why, when I get a lot of novels for review, would I be so excited about this particular book?
No. 1-Colleen Coble is my favorite author. No. 2-I didn't even know she had a new novel coming out. No. 3-It's arrival coincided with the first day of my Christmas vacation from school. No. 4-Colleen Coble went back to Rock Harbor, the place that made me fall in love with her writing to begin with!
CRY IN THE NIGHT by Colleen Coble BRIEF SYNOPSIS Life has finally gotten to a good, safe place for Bree, her new husband Kade, and her son Davy. Davy has finally started to accept the loss of his father in the plane accident that left him separated from Bree for so long, and looks forward to the day when his adoption by Kade is finalized. Kade is having some concerns at work and worries that his job might be cut, leaving him unable to provide for his family. When his boss asks him to falsify some documentation that might allow him to get some additional grand money and keep his job the temptation is there. Money becomes even more of a worry when Bree finds a newborn baby left in the woods, whom she takes in and decides she wants to adopt. Bree and Kade have been trying for one of their own, but she lost the last baby at three months and their doctor thinks ‘in vitro' might be the next step. As always seems to happen, things in Rock Harbor get a little crazy. There are babies in the region that seem to be missing, most often the babies of single mothers. Then there are the claims of a ‘windigo'-an evil figure in native lore-being responsible for the missing babies. Davy believes it could really be a windigo, since he fully believes he saw his dead father bury a baby in the woods. If Bree can get to the bottom of the missing babies and the growing number of bodies that turn up she just might lose her baby and maybe her new husband as well!
As excited as I was when I opened up "Cry in the Night," I had no idea what I was in store for. I have come to love Colleen Coble's novels for their expertly crafted mysteries. They are a bit heavier than what most people think of when they think of Christian fiction, but they are written so much better than the majority of what I've found in Christian mysteries.
Every time I pick up one of Colleen Coble's novels I think to myself, "I AM going to figure the villain out this time. I know it's going to be the one I least expect, I just know it." When I started out reading "Cry in the Night" I thought I had figured out a shocking twist on the bad guy, only to quickly discover that I was supposed to figure it out. Then I spent the rest of the novel trying to figure out who the true bad guy was. Wish me luck for next time because I failed miserably this time around. **SPOILER** It's not Sheriff Kaleva, and for a while I really suspected him.**
What I really love about Colleen Coble's writing is that she writes Christian fiction that anybody can enjoy. There are definite and clear Biblical truths put forth in the storyline, but it's not done in such a way that you feel preached at. I think that even readers who have a faith other than Christianity (or even no faith at all) can enjoy the excellent writing and the phenomenal storytelling without feeling put off in any way.
CONCLUSION
If you have read any of Colleen Coble's Rock Harbor Series novels, you will HAVE to read "Cry in the Night." Not only will you have to read it, you'll want to make sure you get your hands on a copy the moment you can-and I do mean the moment you can.
If you haven’t read any of the Rock Harbor novels you’ll want to do something slightly different. First, go out and read Without a Trace, it starts the series off with a bang. Then you’ll want to read the second novel, Beyond a Doubt. Follow that up with Into the Deep. Then what you’ll need to do is read Abomination. Do this and you’ll be caught up on the happenings of Rock Harbor and you’ll be ready to tackle “Cry in the Night.”
Here's a word of advice. Don't pick up "Cry in the Night" if you only have a few minutes available to read. You'll end up late to where you were going, or forgetting you even planned on going anywhere. You won't be able to put it down, or get anything done until you've finished it.
