Pros:Great Poker Advice, Good Reading, Entertaining & Informative.
Cons:Some Games Discuss Are Almost "Non-Existent" & Structurally Differ. Also "Gambling is Sinful." HA!
The Bottom Line: A Veteran Lays it out for you, to bad some of the games are a bit different & not that popular anymore...
The book begins with history of Brunson's poker career, before the author gets into some general strategies for winning poker. Some theories that are discuss include: keeping emotional control, watching the other players when not in the hand, and playing patiently (waiting for good hands), etc., almost all the advice Doyle gives is good and useable. However he does discuss some strategies and stories of ESP that are a bit far fetched and not particularly useful, but entertaining. I can't say I completely agree with Brunson's feelings about ESP, a supernatural power that allows him to mentally see what his opponent is holding.
However some of the games written about in Brunson's book have undergone considerable changes since it was written. It would be very difficult to find a draw high game spread in a card room today, and even lowball. When the book was published limit Hold'em structures were quite different than ones you would typically watch on ESPN's World Series of Poker, which limits the applicability of some of the advice given in the book. The most relevant section of the book and required reading, would be Brunson's own No-Limit Texas Hold'em advice, which is a staple of any poker players arsenal at the tables.
The book is filled with good advice regardless of how much the poker games structures have changed. Along with structural changes, the players in these games have changed themselves, and winning strategies must be adjusted to keep your bankroll. From my experience the most popular card game at any casino is Texas Holdem, so naturally the book is a huge hit with me as the most prevalent section is just that. Doyle does a good job of keeping the readers interest by breaking up sections with stories & theories behind what moves he makes & why. Rather than boring you with just statistics and facts, it contains a certain entertainment value that is not seen in other poker theory books. Doyle Brunsons life experience separates Super System from the rest.
