While I have no expertise on the matter of this diet's benefits or detriments, I have to disagree with your suggestion that there is a conspiracy among doctors and others to support grain prices. I've worked for a number of agricultural interest in the Midwest (soybeans, grain, dairy, beef, pork), and grain is the least in need of price support. Even if the demand for grain fell sharply, farmers of wheat, barley, rye, etc. would be fine. The gov't keeps prices up by purchasing grain and burning it. Price changes are always met by a gov't response. It's actually the meat and dairy folks who try hard to get prices up. (e.g. "Beef: It's What's for Dinner"; "Got Milk?"; Have you ever heard an "Eat bread" commercial?) They have little gov't help. Besides if farmers had an actual choice of high grain or high meat prices they would all choose meat and start producing it. Grains have very low profit margins compared to meats when both are expensive.

I have some questions about the book that your review doesn't answer. Is it easy to read? Is it thorough? Do you need other resources to use the diet? How much information does Atkins give you? I'm glad to hear the diet worked for you, but would like some more detail on the book itself.

Got a story to tell you! (Reply to this comment)

Please look for my story, I have just started the Atkins diet and am thinking that the way I was taught growing up to diet was soooooo wrong for me. After reading this book, I am glad that I doing this diet. It is only week three and I have lost 9 pounds. A far cry from the other diets when I got to a certain level and no more weight would go and I would get frustrated and quit. I am learning much about me and how my body process carbs, protein and fat. I have a lot to change about the way I think about eating but am willing to make a commitment for life if my metabolism will start working again.

Too good to be true? Maybe. (Reply to this comment)

Once again, good review, but being one of the many "brain washed" medical community, it scares me. My son has been on it and has lost 85 lbs. He needed to and it certainly worked for him. I think he is young enough to probably avoid most of the possible side effects of a diet the purposefully puts your body in ketoacidosis. At my age, I don't think it would be safe. I'm glad he got his weight off now as we have a large family history of heart disease. I'm sure there are people for whom it is ok, but every diet book I've ever seen puts in the disclaimer to check with your doctor and that is stellar advise whatever the diet.

It does work! (Reply to this comment)

I don't understand why many think this diet is dangerous when it is a normal way of eating for some and has been historically in the past. I am not really too terribly overweight and have tried it and lost 20 lbs. When I went off the diet and started eating carbohydrates the way many Americans do, I gained it all back. Most diets encourage carbohydrates - could this be a way to drive grain prices up? Hmmmmm!

Off to buy the book...... (Reply to this comment)

I've been contemplating this book and diet for quite some time. I've been unsure of how this could possibly work! However I think you've convinced me (or at least been the last straw on the proverbial camels back) to give it a shot! What have I got to lose other than a good 15 lbs or so.

Great review--but caution to diabetics (Reply to this comment)
by grey30
I enjoyed, and was motivated, by this review, but I wanted to caution diabetics, and folks with hypo or hyperglycemia to speak with your doctors first!
Many diabetics these days count carbs to control their diets, and protein comes after that. PLEASE use extreme caution when starting ANY diet thaat eliminates carbohydrates to such an extent!
