LOSING WEIGHT:
Sometimes, while dieting the low carb way...you fall off the wagon. So, when that happens, instead of beating yourself up, support yourself. The biggest thing I am learning that is changing my life is to stop feeling guilty. Then, after eating something that was not healthy for me, I am learning to start over with the very next bite. Too often I found myself cheating for days or weeks at a time before I would get back on track. That usually meant doing the induction all over again! Let me tell you that sugar withdrawal is not something my family likes to be around to witness. I am cranky and crabby and emotional when I go off sugar! So, my best advice to others is what I am living myself...don't allow guilt to be an excuse to binge...make the next bite healthy!
Ongoing Weight loss program:How it works!
Once past the "induction" phase of the atkins diet I am allowed some fruit and occasional carbohydrates so that I will lose weight at a slower weight. I am also allowed to have sugar free candy on occasion. My doctor's philosophy is that if I really want something and its driving me nuts, I need to go ahead and have it...without feeling guilty. Then after I indulge in a small portion of what I want, I go right back to my eating plan. This has worked wonderfully for me, because I know if I really want something I can have it. I just have to balance it out for the rest of the week and use wisdom about portion sizes!!! (Ahem, reread the above paragraph in bold and note that I said I fell off the wagon several times...but got back on again!)
Slowly, I am adding in other foods to increase my carbs so that I will find that ideal point where I will neither gain or lose.
Maintenance Program: How it works
Once I am within 10 pounds of my goal, I will experiment with my carb intake. I will work at adding carbs into my diet until I find that magical number of carbs that keeps me from gaining or losing. During this time period, my weight loss should be really slow as I accustom myself to eating more complex carbs. I can not wait until I get to this point!
* I am also journaling how I feel each day and what I eat.
Results: I am feeling better and looking better. I have more energy than before and I am able to say no to temptations like brownies. That is the hardest thing for me to do. I do not seem to crave sugar or sweets like I used to!
The Akins Diet Book:
This is my favorite part of following a high protein or low carb diet. This book is the kind of book I will never give away.... I go back to it every few weeks or so and learn more each time! The book has recipes, tips for eating out, strategies for success and an overall positive attitude that helps me believe in myself. I listened to the audio cassette version...and felt like it was only an appetizer compared to the substance in the hardcover book.
Although the book does not prescribe an exact exercise routine, it highly recommends adding exercise in with the diet to improve your overall health.
The success stories are full of motivational tidbits from dieters who have lost the weight, kept it off and changed their lives! The stories alone serve as a pick me up whenever I have mae choices I am not happy with.
Note:
It is very important that anyone trying any new diet, especially extreme plans where radical changes are made.... it is so crucial to consult your doctor first. This diet will not work for everyone and there are legitimate health issues involved in this plan and other plans. Please talk to your doctor and get the professional help you deserve.
