...a health category when you wrote this review, was there? Things sure have changed around here in two years, haven't they?
I'd rate this review VH in the health and wellness category, but this review only has a little bit of information about the book itself, thus my rating.

Good for you! (Reply to this comment)

I've stumbled on quite a few reviews of this book/diet, and everyone seems so enthused. Glad to see someone pointing out some of the problems, because I know the Berkeley Wellness Letter (a very reliable source for health info) regards the diet as at best a means of temporary weight loss (for the reasons you list) and at worst a health hazard. They stand by the need for a balanced diet. They also stand by the need to get your vitamins etc. as much as possible from foods, which means eating your fruits and veggies, rather than supplements.
I'm a sweets fan myself, but find I can limit them--a SMALL dessert after dinner, rather than snacks all day, which is what seems to happen when I decide to stop having dessert. Go figure. My best weight-control measures to date: breastfeeding, and running 20 to 25 miles a week. Since the babies are all weaned, you may find me upping that mileage. . .
Oops. I've run on. Great review anyway, Jo!

This was a very well written review, showing both positive and negatives. I haven't tried this approach to dieting, but my friend wants to, and it seems sort of sketchy.

So did I. I have lost only 14 lb. in 6 weeks but my cholesterol has gone down 50 points into the normal range! This is enough proof that this diet has health benefits for me besides the weight loss. I do add a few crackers with my egg salad to get the crunch I love. I have not felt any more cravings for the sweets I used to love.

I Tried It (Reply to this comment)

Hi. Thanks for a great review on the Atkins diet. I tried it (in a modified form) and it definitely worked. I do no carbs 4 days a week, and eat whatever Friday - Sunday. It's much too hard to deny myself the pleasures of sweets! Anyway, it worked. My review is "Getting Skinny on Fat, Fat & More Fat."
Working out, however, is the key to good health!
Thanks :-)
