Less than two months ago, I made a dramatic decision to change my life. I had long been on low fat diets, exercise programs, and all of the other seemingly popular diets of the day without much success for most of my life. However, one of the diets I had not tried before -- the Atkins Diet. Many of my friends at work had lost a lot of weight and had kept it off for several years.
However, in order to do this diet effectively I wanted to read about it and the reasons why this diet would seemingly be different from all of the others. So one of my friends gave me a copy of her Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution for me to read.
The Contents of the Book
Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution is separated into many chapters. Instead of going into a long dissertation about each one, I would like to briefly explain what the book is trying to relay in these sections generically.
First, Dr. Atkins goes into great detail to explain the diet itself and why certain individuals should go on this type of program. He explains all sorts of health conditions including one that I had been diagnosed for a long time – impaired glucose tolerance. The more I read about the types of individuals who had gone on this program and their results not only with weight loss but with improvement of general health, the more I was interested in seeing what it would actually do for me.
In addition, he goes into great detail to explain just why this diet works and why others do not. All of what was explained to me in this book made perfect sense and detailed my failure rates with previous diets.
Next, Dr. Atkins goes into detail about the “fortnight diet” or the 14-Day Induction diet that begins the Atkins program. This diet really takes you to a very low carbohydrate level and essentially if you do the diet properly it will help detoxify your body from all sorts of impurities that have been in it for a while. This period will give you the greatest amount of weight loss results.
The next part of the book goes into great detail explaining why the diet makes you healthy. When I began to read these sections I came to the dramatic realization that every word of this book was correct. At a particular time in my life when I was an optimum weight, I was eating really from the Atkins type plan when I was younger. Eating scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage, chicken for lunch, and then a meat and vegetable soup for supper, I realize now that if I had continued to eat on that type of plan I would not be in this situation now. It was the processed foods and carbs that did this effectively to me by me allowing them to come into my regular diet plan.
After being on the induction plan, you then go into the ongoing weight loss plan eventually meeting your goals to maintenance. An entire section of Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution gives you advice on how to gradually add carbohydrates into your diet and by using healthy combinations you will continue to lose weight or at least maintain your weight. In addition there are specific instructions on how to lose weight you may have gained back by going back to old eating habits. I was pleased that this book addressed this issue and thankful that plans were made for possible relapses.
The final part of the book contains menus and recipes that can be used for meal planning. The intent of this section was to show that you could eat heartily with variety and still be satisfied.
Things I Liked about Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution
Details and Writing Style
The main thing that I liked about Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution was that it gave great detail about how the diet is designed and should work. It also gave a lot of personal life experience as evidence and that helps me relate to individuals who may have had similar problems as I have now. The fact that Dr. Atkins speaks to the reader as a person that is sitting next to them is something also that is very attractive about the book and makes it a lot different than other diet books.
Factual Evidence
The next thing that I like about Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution is that it gives factual evidence to back up this diet as being a healthy way to eat and maintain weight. I’ve found throughout all of these passages that the more evidence and scientific facts that were presented, the better I felt about the diet itself and going on it.
Things I Didn’t Like About Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution
The main thing that I didn’t like about Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution was that the recipes in the book do not appeal to me. I realize that very famous individuals made many of the recipes, but they do not appeal to my “South Louisiana” taste buds. So, I’m trying to find new recipes that fit the profile of the diet that will satisfy my tastes.
Does The Diet Book Work?
Well, most people read books and then set them on the shelf. However, in my case, I decided to go on this diet even though I wrote negative thoughts on it in the past. I suppose the idea that I needed to do something and was failing at everything else that I tried was the main reason, as well as the overall success rates of my friends.
Within five weeks, I have now lost twenty-six pounds and am on the way to losing the rest of this weight where I intend to keep it off forever. I feel infinitely better now that I have been on this diet and have more energy to spend in the evening. Usually I would come home and feel totally worn out, but now I feel well enough to do additional activities with my children or even just basic household chores.
Recommendation
Because of my experience with the Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution book, I feel that I must give it a highly recommended rating since I have applied the principles of the diet and am currently losing weight. I do believe that there are other products out there by Dr. Atkins that can help in additional ways of understanding the diet principles rather than the book. On an infomercial that I have seen on cable, there is a video plan in addition to the book offered for about $30 I believe, and I believe that would be an excellent tool to have to help you be successful on this diet.
However, the book is well worth the money, and I have seen it in thrift stores for as low as 10 cents for a paperback copy. Therefore, I highly recommend that if you have been unsuccessful at diets in the past and really am tired of being hungry on other plans that you take a look at Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution. I really believe that by applying the principles in this book it will change your outlook on diets and change your life as well.
