jcare's Full Review: Denis Brian - Einstein: A Life
Three or four times a year I buy a book completely "off-the-wall" and totally unrelated to anything I've read before. This summer I tackled "Einstein - A Life" by Denis Brian.
If you are really interested about the life of Albert Einstein and his trials and tribulations whilst growing up - this is going to be 500 pages of great reading for you. If you are expecting anything scientific or an explanation of relativity - forget it, you'll be bored stiff. In addition to the famous E=mc2 stuff, the book also focuses on the post-relativity years - the Nobel prize, the international lecture circuit, the Atomic Bomb and then onto Princeton.
Personally I found this book very inspirational. Growing up, young Albert prevailed against.
* His elementary school teachers believing that he was mentally retarded.
* Finishing next-to-list in his college Physics finals.
* Being separated from his (pregnant) girlfriend for over a year whilst working in the Patent office.
