| psymo's Full Review: Isaac Asimov - El fin de la eternidad/ The End of ... |
The End of Eternity is one of Isaac Asimov's greatest, not-so-well-known works. It is an epic of the Technician Andrew Harlen and his happenings through time travel. The book takes many turns and twists, and like all Asimov books, VERY descriptive.
That is what I enjoy about Asimov Books, he takes the time to describe certain events that he thinks are important. For Example, he takes close to three pages to describe what the surroundings of the main character, even when the character is only there for about a page of the book!
Anyway, Asimov uses this technique in The End of Eternity. In fact, he uses it very well. The Protagonist in this story is named Andrew Harlen and he is part of the Elite group called Eternity. Basically, this group controls time. They say what people do and when they do it. In essence, the play God. In eternity, Technicians are people who actually do the time travel; Computers are people who make calculations for time travel; Maintenance People are the people who maintain the Kettles for time travel; Educators are people who teach the Technicians. Finally, Kettles are the machines used for time travel.
Well, while Harlen is traveling through time, a man infiltrates Eternity and tries to end it. The reasoning behind the end is that when Eternity was created, Space Exploration halted. By the time the Earth continued Space Travel, (Year 111,134 or something like that) Space was full. There were "No Trespassing" signs all over the universe. Earth was a small power. So, this man was going to detonate an A-bomb at the Eternity Research Center in 1932. The decision Andrew must make is a tough one, End Eternity and Begin Infinity -or- Continue Eternity.
This is a great book and I would recommend you to read it. It is about 300 pages and is hard to put down. If you enjoy Science Fiction Novels, GO FOR IT!!!
[Note: If you have read this book before, you may have noticed I have left out quite a bit of story line. Well, I did not want to "Ruin" the entire book for people whom have not read it. Thank you for keeping this a secret! :) ]
