A Must Have For Every Parent!!

Written: Aug 04 '00
Pros:Jam packed with great ideas!
Cons:Difficult to find...

I bought Vicki Lansky's Feed Me I'm Yours Cookbook when I was pregnant with my son 11 years ago, and I still use it with my 3 year old daughter! This is the best book, with much more than just nutritious recipes!

The first chapter starts out with a great wealth of information on making your baby food from scratch, without being pushy. Vicki offers alternative suggestions for nervous parents, such as "unsweetened applesauce, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, ripe banana, and Cream of Rice cereal." She offers many helpful tips and information on just when and how to start your little one on solid foods, also making you aware of potential allergy causing foods such as egg whites, citrus foods and wheat products. Vicki also warns us about the extreme danger of giving honey to an infant younger than a year old. (I heard recently that you actually shouldn't give honey to a child under 2 years of age).

The second chapter goes into some wonderful "Finger Foods" from babies younger than 18 months on up to actually baking your own teething biscuits! I made my own baby food, but I'm not that good! LOL! But what a wonderful idea! The teething recipes include "Hard Round Teething Biscuits", "Banana Bread Sticks" and even homemade graham crackers! Yum! :)

The third chapter goes on to talk about lots of nutritious and exciting "Toddler Foods" such as delicious "Honeyed Carrots," "Triangle Sandwiches," and "Tiny Meatballs," just to name a few. She includes many easy, appealing desserts, such as "Banana Instant Pudding," and "Homemade Fresh Fruit Sherbet."

The fourth chapter in the book contains several pages of healthy snack ideas, including a favorite in our house called "Goodie Balls." These consist of peanut butter, honey, instant cocoa or carob powder, and optional peanuts, sunflower seeds, or wheat germ. It is so easy! You just combine the ingredients, roll and refrigerate. Most kids go crazy for this protein packed treat! ;)

I could go on and on about each individual chapter in this awesome book, but I will just tell you...there are pages and pages of fantastic recipe ideas, including "Seasonal Recipes", for summertime, Halloween, Christmas, etc...

Vicki Lansky's Feed Me I'm Yours is such an incredible book, offering so much more than just recipes. In the remaining chapters, she has some fantastic Birthday Party ideas for children from ages 1-5, including (of course) recipes, activities and games, as well as a couple of dangers that can easily be avoided, such as keeping your little ones from running with lollipops in their mouths and choking hazards of broken balloons.

Last and I think best of all is the "Kitchen Crafts" section! This chapter includes recipes such as "Stove-Top Playdough," "Clay Christmas Ornaments" and "Finger Paints" to name just a few! This section brings back so many fond memories, since my Mother actually referred to this book quite frequently! Every Christmas our whole family got involved in making these easy Christmas ornaments, they were so much fun to paint and shellac, we really felt like we made a big contribution to the festivities!

Wait, I am not finished yet! The book goes on to give some easy gardening tips, First Aid tips, and covers the B.R.A.T. diet for illness and also some traveling tips for eating on the road. For a book containing only 121 pages, it sure packs a ton of fantastic ideas and hints to help make child rearing a great deal more fun and smooth sailing! :)

I have heard that this book can be difficult to find, but I suggest you do your best to do so. I'd have been lost without it!
