| Borger's Full Review: Gene Zion - Harry the Dirty Dog |
If you have a dog, you know they love to get dirty and hate to take baths. This is the story of a very adventurous dog who is just like that. But he learns why it's good to stay clean.
Harry was a white dog with black spots. One day when he heard the water running in the tub he took the scrub brush and buried it in the backyard. Then he ran away from home.
He played where they were fixing the street and got very dirty. He played at the railroad and got even dirtier. He played tag with other dogs and got more dirtier. Then he got into some coal and became a black dog with white spots.
Harry started to wonder if his family thought he really ran away. He was getting tired and hungry too. So he ran back home. When he got there he sat in the backyard. One of the kids looked out the window and said, "there's a strange dog in the backyard." They didn't know it was Harry. He tried to show them it was him by doing tricks. He did them over and over, but his family just said "it couldn't be Harry." Harry started to walk away but then he remembered something. He ran and dug up that scrub brush and ran into the house and went upstairs and jumped into the bathtub. This little dog wants a bath said his family. Harry had the soapiest bath ever and when he was clean they couldn't believe it was really Harry.
It was wonderful to be home, Harry thought, as he fell asleep. He slept so soundly that he didn't even feel the scrub brush he hid under his pillow.
This book was first published in 1956. There are 28 pages and great pictures. The author is Gene Zion and it is illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham.
