kuuleimomi's Full Review: D. B. Johnson - Henry Climbs a Mountain
Henry Climbs a Mountain is an awesome book. The most amazing thing about it is that its a true story. I did not know that upon first reading. I opened a remarkably illustrated book for kids and started reading about Henry (the bear) who wanted to climb a mountain. But he had only one shoe another was being fixed. So he went to get it. But on his way he met a tax collector Sam, who asked him about paying taxes. Henry refused to pay to the State that allowed slavery and was put in jail. And wonderful things happened there by the power of imagination and with a little help of a crayon he had in his pocket Henry did climb a mountain.
D. B. Johnson is not only my boss father but hes also an awesome writer and illustrator. This book is a fine piece of art that can get any kids thinking going. He captured time 150 years ago and retold the story of a real person.
In the very last page he writes about Henry David Thoreau. This is a wonderful trick and a great way to teach kids through a very comprehensible story. Both, kids and their parents learn about life of a great person through Johnsons series about Henry (Henry Hikes to Fitchburg, Henry Builds a Cabin, and Henry Climbs a Mountain).
Illustrations are the major thing about the book. Remember, Henry's a bear who lived more than 150 years ago and so are the people around him. Style, with which the illustrations are executed, is probably one of my most favorite ones when I was a kid myself. (Here should be some examples but Im afraid Russian analogies of some of my favorite cartoons wont tell you anything and they are cartoons, not the books). I definitely would love to have all the three books and once Im done with the review Im off to ask Reed (my boss and author's son) a great favor.
This book will make a great present for any child and even some adults (moi, i.e.). Its the finest masterpiece, done with a great style. It has so much more to offer than you can expect from a book with pictures.
