Pros: For the scientist and the skeptic. For the scienctific and logic-minded.
Cons: HCSB isn't my favorite translation.
What's a Study Bible and What's Christian Apologetics?
The Holman Christian Standard Bible is a Study Bible in which its "studies" include Christian Apologetics. So to make sense of all of this I'd like to define what these terms mean.
A study bible is a type of bible that includes extra information besides juts the Old and New Testaments. It commonly includes supplementary information, sometimes for a specific crowd - Men, Women, Teenagers, Children's, the Elderly, for Beginners, for Pastors, etc. all for the purpose of learning more about God's word and understanding the Bible better.
This particicular study bible deals with Christian Apologetics. Apologetics are what rationalize ones beliefs. It is like an Atheist saying "God does not exist because the brain produces consciousness" or a Theist saying "One cannot objectively measure consciousness (during life or after death)." Furthermore, Christian Apologetics include formulations of arguments using physics, mathematics, logic, philosophy and reasoning to say that Christianity is just as logical and rational to believe in as a scientific theory or any other religion.
Context is everything!
There is an introduction of who each author of the bible was, as well as a highlight of the context of the history and geography. Knowing these facts are helpful in understanding what you are reading and when it is happening. This paints a picture of what was actually going on during this time, historically. This feature is not found in all bibles, but is common to many study bibles.
About me and why I love this bible
I have been a Christian since January of last year. I was raised Catholic in a "Sunday Christian" family that went to church, but didn't do anything spiritual outside of church. This led me away from religion and toward science. I am a biology major at my college and still love science to this day. However I am also a devout Christian that loves God and believes in what the Bible teaches. Because of this, Christian Apologetics interests me immensely. This Bible is suited to my “needs” as a scientific thinker. It does not explain bible verses simply as “Because it is God’s word” but instead takes the time to describe, interpret and contemplate what ideas in the Bible mean.
If you like C.S Lewis or books such as Language of God by Francis S. Collins that contemplates the relationships between science and faith and the rationality of believing in God and/or Christianity, the HCSB Apologetics Study Bible is right for you.
The quality of the bible is great and the pages do not feel cheaply made as in my experiences with other bibles. The features (listed below) are phenomenal and aid me greatly in understanding the bible and philosophical thinking. The HCSB translation is comparable to RSV and NRSV, easier to read than NKJV, KJV and ESV, but takes more time to read then TM, GW and NLT. Search for “bible translation chart” on Google to help aid you in your decision of what bible translation to read.
