The authors have succinctly articulated the essence of Christian masculinity, and have shared experiences about their marriages and parenting that largely "ring true" to me personally. They could have, but didn't, approach this work as a clinical study. Instead, they chose to use experiences from their own lives as men to probe the essence of good relationships with women, other men, and God, This approach, in my opinion, lends a great deal of credibility to their work. (I tire of columnists and other so called relationship experts who deign to discuss the proper way to raise children when they themselves have not had children of their own, and, at best, have an arm's length relationship with a niece or nephew!)
Their thoughts about work and the responsibility of providing for one's own correctly captures the dichotomy of responsibility vs. personal fulfillment, and the integral part personal sacrifice and service to others play in being a "real man". While they don't get it 100% right (why should they?--the rest of us have been struggling with these issues for years and don't have it right either), they bring voice to feelings and truths most men need to eventually confront in our struggle to be "better" and authentic.
