Star Wars Legacy of the Force: Invincible by Troy Denning
"What do you call the person who brings dinner to a rancor? The appetizer!" Jacen Solo, age 14, Jedi Training Academy, Yavin IV.
When Jacen Solo, son of Princess Leia Organa Solo and Han Solo, slew his aunt, Mara Jade Skywalker, he slipped completely over to the Dark side, becoming the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. Now, the Skywalker Solo clan has been hit hard by the double loss.
And no one is more affected than Jaina Solo, twin sister of Jacen. Named Sword of the Jedi by her Uncle Luke, she realizes that it is her duty to end the threat of Darth Caedus.
But how can she? Not even considering the emotional impact of slaying her twin, how can she bring down a fully realized Dark Lord of the Sith. Twin or not, Jacen is much more powerful in the Force than she is, fueled by the hatred and burning need for control that has twisted his soul.
And he knows her every move. His training mirrored hers. Their fighting styles are as familiar as their faces. No, if she is going to succeed, she needs new tricks. And she knows just the person to teach her.
Boba Fett.
Living with the Mandalorians, Jaina works hard to up her fighting skills, learning new techniques and dirty tricks. Boba Fett, eager to have his revenge on Jacen for the death of his daughter, is more than willing to help. The fact that no matter how it works out, Han Solo will loose a child is something the Bounty Hunter considers a karmic bonus.
However, it will take more than one Jedi with a bag of new tricks to take on the defacto ruler of the Galactic Alliance. Fortunately, Jaina is not alone; Uncle Luke also has a few new tricks. However, he can not face his nephew himself; he is far to involved with the murder of his wife. If he tries to kill Caedus, he would inevitably merely replace him as the Dark Side, fueled by his vengeance, consumed his soul.
Also joining the fight are the Mandalorians, and Mirta Gev, Boba Fett's granddaughter, the insectoid Verpine, the royal family of the Hapes Consortium, and yes, that means that Tenel Ka will be fighting against the father of her child.
Mr. Denning has created a tight and interesting tale full of drama and angst. The nature of family is explored with some interesting twists; Jacen Solo fathered the heir to the Hapan throne, a fact that has always been a carefully guarded secret. Now his lover, his mother, and his twin sister are all coming for him. Further, no matter what happens, the Solo family is loosing a child. The loss of Anakin almost destroyed them. Can they survive another?
Fast paced action is melded with emotional considerations in a tale that demands a little more thought than most escapist literature. A solid read from a solid author.
