artemis8's Full Review: Mark Crilley - Miki Falls 1: Spring
* the image and publication information on this book are for Miki Falls 4: Winter though the name of the product on epinions says Miki Falls 1: Spring. I will be reviewing Miki Falls 4: Winter.
In this fourth and final book in the Miki Falls series, Miki (a high school senior) and Hiro (also a high school senior who also happens to have a very odd profession, being a Deliverer), are still on the run from the elders who don't like what they have done. Miki made sacrifices, like leaving her family, to be with Hiro, because she loves him and she hopes they can stay together.
Hiro has a familiar who helps him in his work, named Anra. She is rather other worldly and can shape shift. Anra seems distant though and ultimately they question whether they can trust her or not. The relationship is precarious and as the story progresses I know I found myself questioning her loyalty.
The story expresses real emotion, even being in a manga/comic book style format. There are conversation bubbles and narrations in rectangle boxes. But much of the story is told in the illustrations. Mark Crilley does a great job of making this a very engaging story. And the artwork is great with a wonderful way of showing wind blowing through clothes and hair and just facial expressions in general. Miki is very pretty with large eyes and all the characters are very unique and distinct in their looks.
I really liked the ending and I wasn't expecting it to end the way it does. It is a great way to wrap up the series.
This 167 page book is a fast read. I easily read it in under an hour. One thing I liked was at the end of this book Crilley gives us some info on the series, with some initial sketches and descriptions of some of the changes he made while writing the books. It was rather interesting.
While you absolutely would not want to start this series on this final book, I do recommend starting from Spring and enjoying this entire series. Winter does a wonderful job of completing the series.
