Pros: Fairly well paced. Fun characters
Cons: I still want more and it ends
This is the third book in a series by Dara Joy called the Matrix of Destiny. It can be read alone or with the rest of the series. I'd suggest reading the whole series.
In this book, as in the previous one (Rejar), the central character is a Familiar. Familiars are a race that can change shape. They are humanoid or they are cats. In whatever shape they assume they retain characteristics of cats. Some of those are independent, agile, loving to play, and quick reflexes. What really sets Familiars apart though is their sex appeal. Male Familiars are known to have sex at every opportunity and their partners are more than willing. If you looked up sex in the dictionary, they would be the definition.
The tunnels aren't a character per se but they are a central part of all the books. The tunnels connect worlds. You may not get a direct connection but you do leave the world you are on.
So, now this book.....There is a problem. A young Familiar out on his first adventure is missing. His family is frantic. He's also Gian Ren's younger cousin. Gian Ren is also the Guardian of the Mist. That is someone who is an excellent tracker and can blend into the mists. Off Gian goes only to find himself drugged and chained to a wall. His capturers are planning on his sexual appetite to deflower a young woman making her ineligible to role this world. Then, kill him.
Renise doesn't want to rule. She wants to leave. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a choice. Her mother's brother-in-law has decided that he wants to rule and he wants to marry her. If she is no longer a virgin, he can rule and make the extreme gesture of marrying Renise. This gets him everything he wants. Renise has to act quickly. Her plan: get to the Familiar, have him deflower her and take her with him through the tunnels.
Gian knows as soon as Renise walks in the door that this non-Familiar woman should be his mate. He will now do anything that he can to protect her even if it means giving up his life.
As expected, Renise frees Gian and they escape into the tunnels. Their adventures through foreign worlds are fun and sexual. Renise doesn't want to get married yet Gian has already claimed her. Her real adventure, the journey to love, has just begun.
And the Familiar that was lost. He is found by an old woman. We don't get his story which is a shame. I really wonder about him.
Many of the characters from the previous books show up in this one. I like the way they are brought in. But if you don't know who they are, a brief introduction is given.
This book is for those who like fantasy. You have to imagine these worlds. Many of the events are not real believable but are fun. I look forward to the next book in this series and learning more about this universe Dara Joy is creating. (Fans of this series may have to wait a while. She is fighting with the publisher of this series. I sure hope she has some books ready to go when the fighting is resolved!)
