Pros: Great story and illustration; nice added touches on the cover
Adam Hargreaves, the son of the late Roger Hargreaves, is doing his father proud by continuing the Mr. Men and Little Miss line that his father created many years ago. Following in his father's footsteps, Adam has created new characters that he has both written and illustrated in new tales so it shouldn't be a surprise to find a character named Mr. Birthday making his home in the Mr. Men universe.
Mr. Birthday loves birthdays especially all the parties associated with it. In fact he loves it so much that he never takes off his party hat. And because he loves birthday parties so much, it's not surprising that he's very good in organizing them. For example, for Mr. Greedy's birthday he baked two birthday cakes-one for the guests and one for Mr. Greedy. The latest birthday party thrown for Mr. Happy turned out to be a great success. But apparently Mr. Birthday has forgotten a very important birthday coming up. He tries and tries to remember but gets more and more frustrated. Will he be able to figure it out before it's too late?
I'm glad Adam Hargreaves has picked up where his father left off. He is expanding the world and continuing the fun. His illustrations are more polished than his father's with the help off digital colouring and rendering. But the characters are still drawn in the style developed by Roger Hargreaves. I also appreciate that Adam is telling great tales like his father, though he isn't as wordy. Plus, he adds more in his background illustrations.
The cover is more celebratory that previous books with the inclusion of background illustrations, foil stamping for the title, and glitter sprinkled on certain areas. While the concept of the having just the character on the cover is still prominent, Adam takes it one step further making his style felt by all. I also like how it says "originated by Roger Hargreaves" on the cover as well giving proper due to his father's handiwork.
Mr. Birthday is a great addition to the Mr. Men series. My son really loves these books and will always ask for one or two to be read to him before going to bed. And like all kids he will gravitate towards his favourite ones at the time. For now Mr. Birthday tops the list because so many different characters grace the pages. Besides, who doesn't like birthday parties?
