I was looking through the different Dr. Seuss books at the library. I wanted to find something to read to my three-year-old son Allen. This is my contribution to the Read Across America Write Off hosted by Debbie26.
I chose the book My Book about ME which was written by Dr. Seuss & Roy McKie.
About the Book:
My Book about ME would be perfect for a child aged 5-7. It is a book that they can write all kinds of things about themselves in. There is a place to write their name, trace their hand and foot, write their address, phone number, favorite foods, favorite color, pets and lots of other things about the child. It also gives them a two page listing of future jobs and there is a place for them to write down what they want to do when they grow up. There is also a section for the child to draw and to write their own short story.
The Illustrations:
There is a corresponding picture for each thing that the child is supposed to write. There are a nice variety of colors used. It is primarily done in bright colors. There are a couple of pages where it shows different types of houses. The child is to pick which type house they live in. There is a drawing for each one. It shows an apartment building, a house in the city, a farmhouse, a house in the desert and more even including an igloo.
Most of the drawings in the book are of animals. On the I Go to School page there are different ways given of getting to school. The child picks if they walk, ride their bike, go in a helicopter, bus, car or subway. In each picture you see a dog doing the method that is listed.
My Thoughts:
I think this is a really cool book! It is a great book with 72 pages. It really makes the child think about all of the things in their life. It asked them to share their favorites and things they don't like also. I wish I had this when I was a child. It would be a lot of fun to go back and look at things I had written when I was around 6.
My son, Allen, and I went through the whole book together. Of course, we couldnt write in because it belongs to the library. So we talked about all of the different things that are shown in the book. We looked at the pictures and I asked Allen the questions. He thought it was a lot of fun. He enjoyed answering all of the questions that I asked him.
There is a page that has a hand print on it. The child is supposed to trace their hand on the page to show how big their hand is. We put Allens hand on the page to compare it to the one there. He especially enjoyed the Favorite Pet page. It had a bunch of different animals pictured on two pages. It is on a purple background and none of the animals are colored. They are all white and have the name printed beside them. I would call out a type of animal and Allen would have fun finding it and showing me where it was at. This was almost like a game to him and he really enjoyed it.
Some of the things in the book we couldnt do. Like one thing said how many steps it is from your front door to a tree and then to a mailbox and then the steps to the first store. Well its pouring down rain here so that is something we couldnt do if we wanted to.
The next time I have a gift to buy for a child that is aged 5-7 I am going to try to find this book to give them. I think it would be fun for any child, girl or boy. Then years later it would be really fun to look back on.
Read Across America Day is just one of the many celebrations in honor of what would have been Dr. Seuss' 100th birthday. This write off is hosted by Debbie26.
