My daughter and I have had a lot of fun with some of the books put out by Klutz. One of these we have really enjoyed together is the one called NAIL ART.
The book has instructions on how to create many different designs and gives tips & techniques for successfully working with, designing and completing nail art designs.
It comes with 6, .18 fl.oz. bottles of nail colors (banana yellow, oasis green, pacific blue, sugar white, rocket red and black). The nail colors are water-based and non-toxic. They dry in just a minute or two unless they have been applied very thickly. They can be thinned, if necessary, with a drop or two of water.
GETTING STARTED
This section tells you which supplies to gather. Like newspaper in case of a spill and toothpicks for fine lines and dots. It also suggests using a water based felt tip marker for fine lines and dots.
It reminds you to wait for each color to dry before painting next to or on top of it, to remember to be patient and that "No artistic talent is required",
WORKING WITH PAINT
Tips on preparing paint by shaking the bottle, remembering to re-cap paints so they don't dry out and care of the brush.
There is a color chart for mixing colors to get different shades (1 drop red + 8 drops white = pink ).
HOW TO PAINT YOUR NAILS
Proper method for applying polish
WORKING WITH GLITTER, JEWELS, EYES & BEADS
Shows how special effects can be done using these items plus wet polish or white glue.
HOW TO MAKE BASIC SHAPES
You guessed it! Shows how to make the basic shapes used in the designs; circles, teardrops, lines and layers.
Who ever sat around painting nails and coming up with all these cute & clever designs deserves a bow.
It is fun to paint our nails in a whimsical design and wait for the surprise, delight and sometimes admiration we see on friends faces. Often the question is asked "How did you do that?" or "Where did you get that idea".
One cute design is painting the little pigs on your toe nails. That's right! Don't forget your feet. Another is the snake which runs from its tail on your little toe across your toes to its' head complete with forked tongue on your big toe.
At one of my daughters birthday parties we decided to do nail art. It was a big hit. I started to do the painting on a couple of the girls (one girl chose bumblebees and another chose the ladybugs). The girls were so excited they took over the painting so they could try it out for themselves. They did a great job and everybody went home from the party sporting nails with different painted designs.
There were no problems because if a mistake was made they just waited a minute for the paint to dry and then peeled it off or washed it off.
In fact, this is the only flaw I have found with this paint. The painted design won't hold up long because it is water-based & easily peels or washes off.
This is a good thing if younger girls are using it and you don't want them to be wearing nail polish all the time.
If you want to keep the design for longer though, you can apply regular clear nail polish over the completed design to seal it.
The Klutz Nail Art book is a 66 page, spiral bound book on heavy glossy card stock. The nail paints are in a see thru box attached to a heavy backboard which extends below the book.
There are color photos of finished designs and colorful graphic art depicting the many designs.
The directions for making the various designs are step by step and quite easy to do, using basic shapes and layering the colors.
We bought our book at a Cracker Barrel restaurant for $19.95. At different times I have seen refills there for the nail paints.
I checked on-line and found that Books-a-Million has this title for $13.96 ( $12.57 if you belong to their club).

The nail paints include these ingredients:
"Water, acrylic resins, glycol ethers, polyethylene oxides and paraffins. May contain: D&C Red #7 Calcium Lake, Ultra Blue BC and iron, Chromium and Titanium Oxides. ( Do not apply to broken skin. If rash develops, discontinue use."
